WILLIAM GRANT COOKE was born May 23, 1848, in Fayette County, Ky., removed in childhood with his parents to Mercer County, locating near Bergen, where he grew to manhood; in 1864 he went to Chicago, Ill., where he remained one year, when he returned to Mercer County and located northeast of Harrodsburg, where he has since resided. His father, William A. Cooke, a native of Surry County, N.C., was born December 12, 1821, removed with his parents to Tennessee, and in 1831 to Mercer County, Ky.; in 1843 to Fayette County, and in 1848 returned to Mercer. He was an active and public-spirited man, and prominent in public improvements. He was largely interested in breeding fine stock, and made a speciality of shorthorn cattle. He was an old line Whig in politics. His death occurred in Florida, March, 1873. He married Sarah A., a daughter of Squire and Nancy L. (Mosby) Grant, of Fayette County (born in 1823, died in 1860), and of their nine children two only are now living, viz.: Nannie (Bowman) and William G. October 1, 1872, William G. was married to Miss Anna, daughter of Warren O. And Rebecca E. (McConnell) Parker, of Fayette County, and to them have been born Rebecca, Grant, Anna L., Nellie and William H. D. Mr. Cooke's great-grandmother was a sister of Daniel Boone.
