V.M. PITTMAN DIED ON FRIDAY In Lexington, Kentucky, Unexpectedly; Remains of Fine Young Man were Brought Here for Interment Last Friday morning the news came over the wire that Mr. Venley M. Pittman had died in Lexington, Kentucky where he had made his home since early manhood. He was 37 years of age. During his residence in Lexington he had been in the employ of the same people, a hotel company. This, as well as the testimony of Mr. C.W. Stivers, a friend of the deceased who accompanied the remains to Roanoke, indicates the high esteem in which Mr. Pittman was held by those who knew him there. It is said that no young man stood better than he among the people of his adopted home. Mr. Pittman had been a sufferer for years from rheumatism and had been confined to his room some days before his death, but the last letter received from him stated that he was better. Hence the news of his demise was a severe shock to the aged mother, Mrs. S.C. Pittman and the sisters of the deceased, Mrs. Belt White, Mrs. J.H. Baker and Miss Martha Pittman. In their crushing sorrow these good people have the profound sympathy of their very many friends who counted it a sad privilege to minister unto them in every way possible in this time of deep affliction. Mr. Nichols went to Birmingham and escorted the remains to the home of the mother in this city on Sunday where the funeral was held at four o'clock in the afternoon, conducted by Rev. S.P. Spiegel of West Point, assisted by Rev. C. Orear. The services were full of tender sentiment and christian comfort. Beautiful designs in flowers were the offerings of loving hearts and willing hands. Far more people came to pay respect than could find room in the house. Not a heart present but was stirred to its depths by the untimely death which has thrown a tragic pall over one of the best homes in our community. With loyal devotion the remains were followed by a large company to the cemetery in this place where interment was made. May of us will long remember the bright-faced, sunny natured boy that used to greet us in the days of yore, who went away to make a name and record for himself in the world, and who has been called so suddenly from life, where he filled so large a place in many hearts. TO OUR FRIENDS For all the tender sympathy and abundant loving kindnesses you manifested toward us when the clouds hung low and heavy on the occasion of the death of our loved one, Venley, we would like to express our appreciation, but truly words have not the power to convey the gratitude we feel. We can only say, we love and thank you and may our Heavenly Father richly reward you.
