The son of the late Carlton Earl and Pearl Fleming Smathers, he is survived by his wife Lena Stull Smathers; a son William T. Smathers, Jr.; a daughter-in- law, Etna Ann Cannon Smathers; a grandson, William Boyd Smathers; two aunts; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Mark. A native of Bath Co. Mr. Smathers was a former farmer, and had been employed by Springate and Co., Lexington for the past 23 years. An active leader, he was an award-winning 4H leader, council member and farm bureau director. He was instrumental in the restoration and reopening of Old Springfield Church in Bath Co,. and also served as clerk of the session, Sunday School superintendent, and Elder at both Sharpsburg Presbyterian and Old Springfield Church. He attended Tates Creek Presbyterian and Lafayette Church of the Nazarene in Lexington as well. Funeral srvices will be held at Eastin- Taul Funeral Home, Mt. Sterling, at 1 p.m. Friday, December 30, with visitation from 4-8 today, and from 11 a.m. until time of srvice on Friday.
