KyGenWeb; Kentucky Biographies; BURCHETT, Drury J. Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B, 1887 Lawrence County Drury J. BURCHETT is a native of Floyd County, Ky., was born August 15, 1842. His father and mother, Ainsted and Rebecca (Pigg) BURCHETT, are also natives of Floyd County. His paternal grandfather, Drury BURCHETT, came from Virginia and was among the earlier settlers of Floyd County. The great-grandfather of our subject was one of four brothers who came from Scotland and fought in the war for American independence, and in that struggle two of these brothers lost their lives. Drury J. BURCHETT, at the age of seven years, was taken from Floyd to Lawrence County by his parents, and at Louisa worked at the trade of blacksmithing. At the breaking out of the civil war he enlisted in the Fourteenth Kentucky Infantry, Federal service, served nearly four years, and rose to the rank of Major from that of a private soldier. On his return to Louisa he was elected to the Kentucky Legislature, in 1865, to represent Lawrence and Boyd Counties, and was re-elected in 1879; was tendered the nomination for Congress in his district in 1886 on the Republican ticket. He was married March 15, 1865, to Miss Addie Jones, daughter of Daniel D. Jones, a deceased merchant of Louisa. Mr. BURCHETT has had born to him six children. From 1866 to 1868 Mr. BURCHETT was engaged in the general merchandise business at Louisa, but in 1877 changed his trade to that of boots and shoes exclusively, carrying a stock worth from four thousand to five thousand dollars; is treasurer of the county, and secretary and treasurer of Louisa public schools. Mr. BURCHETT is a Freemason, a Republican, and a member of the Methodist Church.
