William Wells settled in Floyd County, Ky in 1836, and when Johnson County was formed from Floyd County in 1843-44 was cut off with Johnson County; he was a farmer and physician. Richard M. Wells, paternal grandfather of our subject, was born in Pennsylvania, he moved from there to Virginia and subsequently settled in Kentucky; he was a farmer and trader, and served in the war of 1812; his wife was a Miss Porter before marriage. John P. Wells received his education in the common and select schools of Paintsville, he studied law under James E. Stewart, of Louisa, Ky., and began practice in his native town in 1877, where he now enjoys a large and lucrative patronage. In 1884 he married Julia Howes, of Johnson County, a daughter of John and Jane Howes. They have three children, viz: Marcus Lindsay, Jimsson Kendrick and Virgie Lee. Mr. Wells is a Democrat in politics, and represented Johnson and Floyd Counties in the Legislature in 1883-84. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Above from the Floyd County web suite. _____________________________________________ Below from Abstracts of Rev War Pension Files; WELLS, Richard; Ga & Va Lines, wife Susanna; W6437, BLW #26162-160-55 and BLW #52748-160-55: Soldier married 28 Sept 1797 to Susanna Hutcherson in Russell County, Va, Soldier was born 11 Feb 1760 at Philadelphia, Pa. and he moved with an uncle "Dr Wells" to Augusta, Ga. and the uncle was a surgeon in the Rev War and the uncle was killed after the Rev War in a duel with General Abram Jackson; The said Richard Wells lived at Augusta, Ga when he enlisted and in 1780 he moved to Washington County, Va. and also enlisted there and later moved to Ky. He applied 20 Feb 1834 in Floyd County, Ky and the soldier died there 17 or 18 or 27 or 28 Mar 1838 (all of these dates are shown in the file). Widow applied 28 Oct 1850 in Johnson Co, formerly a Part of Floyd Co, Ky and she was then aged 73. a son George Wells was aged 46 in 1844..A son Moses Wells was born 13 Apr 1804, The oldest child (not named) was referred to as deceased in 1844. The son Moses Wells stated that he had 2 bros and 1 sister older than himself but did not give their names. In 1849 a William Wells was referred to (no kinship given) and in 1855 a John Wells was a J P for Johnson County, Ky (no kinship given): Widow's sister Martha Porter, the widow of John Porter, was a resident of Floyd Co, Ky in 1844 and her son, John Porter was aged 46 in 1844, he was a resident of Floyd Co.
