WASH CRUTCHER was born in Franklin County, March 7, 1839, and is the fourth son of Richard 
and Permelia (Berry) Crutcher. Richard Crutcher was a native of Virginia, and came to Kentucky 
with his father; was sheriff for a while and afterward kept a hotel in Frankfort for a number 
of years, but was a farmer the balance of his life, and was always a prominent man in the 
Christian Church, dying at the age of eighty-six years; his father was quite a noted Baptist 
preacher. Wash Crutcher was taken to Woodford County, near Versailles, when eleven years old; 
his mother having died about this time he was reared by Capt. Samuel Berry, his grandfather; 
was educated at the select schools, finishing in the Kentucky University at Harrodsburg. He has 
always been engaged in farming and stock raising, and buys, sells and ships all kinds of stock. 
He has the finest country residence in Franklin County, and also owns 560 acres of finely 
improved land. December 19, 1860, he married Virginia C. Redd, of Fayette County, daughter 
of A. O. and Matilda (Berry) Redd. Nine children have been born to this union, eight living: 
Overton R., the eldest, married Miss Bettie Moore, of Georgetown, Ky., and is now in the 
wholesale and retain grocery business in Frankfort, Ky.; the remaining living children are 
Mattie B., Olynthus, James W., Richard R., Samuel B., Allen C. and Maria H. Mr. Crutcher, 
his wife, Overton R., Mattie B. and Olynthus are members of the Christian, with membership 
at Grassy Springs, Woodford County.
