Hon, J. R. Luten, Fulton County, was born March 6, 1843, in Moscow, Hickman Co., Ky., and is the fourth of eight children born to Dr. Samuel B. Luten and Mary A. (Ashburn) Luten, natives of Bertie Co., North Carolina and Logan Co., Ky. respectively. The father came to Moscow in 1828. Subject's education was received at the Moscow Seminary and Bell Forest Academy, near Union City, Tenn. At the breaking out of the war he enlisted in Faulkner's regiment, Capt. H.A.Tyler's company of Forrest's Cavalry. At Florence, Alabama in the fall of 1863, he was captured, but was soon after paroled and never entered the service again. He turned his attention to farming, but in 1865 began the study of medicine. In 1866-67, he attended a course of lectures at the Jefferson Medical Center at Philadelphia, and in 1867-68 he attended the medical department of the Louisiana State University, from which he received his diploma. He returned to Kentucky and settled in Wesley, Hickman County, where he Remained until 1875. He then went to Fulton, where he has since resided. He now has a very fair practice and is becoming more successful every year. In 1881 he was elected to thelegislature from Fulton and Hickman Counties. Dr.Luten was mmarried in September 186 to Miss Kate Browder, of Fulton County, and daughter of David and Mary (Smith)Browder. The father was a native of Hopkins Co., Ky. and of English descent; the mother of Muhlenburgh County and of Dutch descent. They came to Fulton County in 1827. Mrs. Luten is the mother of four children: Samuel D., Mary, Wiley R. and Horace.
