1953 in Fulton from Fulton Daily Leader by Eunice Mitchell January The year opened on a note of promise for the future with the organization of a committee with Mrs. Ward Bushart as chairman, for the purpose of beautifying the city. Mrs. Mildred Matthews won a $25 prize with her name for the group - The Twin City Improvement Committee. The new year saw the death of a 75 year old negro - Pete Cravens, who suffocated when fire destroyed his home on the corner of Wade and Davis Mill streets. Later in the month an estimated $15,000 damage was caused by a fire at the First Christain Church. Two Jefferson Street residents, Dr. I. H. Read and B. G. Huff died within a week. The William McDades moved to Mayfield following the Sale of the McDade Furniture Company to George Howard.
