A.R. "Humpy' Edwards, whose homespun writings appeared regularly in The ickman Courier since 1944, died July 3 of injuries sustained in a fall. The accident occurred while he was working on the roof of his restaurant, "Humpy's Pig Stand. A rural mail carrier for seventeen years, Edwards began writing his popular weekly column about people, the weather and the former residents which he called the "far-away ones," fourteen years ago. It was first called "Rambling Round On Route Two" and later "Home Town Musings" when his health forced him to curtail his mail-carrying activity somewhat. Funeral services where held Friday, July 4 at West Hickman Baptist Church. Bro. Joe Harris and Bro. Joe Franklin officiated. Burial followed in City Cemetery. The restaurant owner, mail carrier and news paper columnist was born April 16, 1899 near Sylvia, Tenn. He went to work for the Hickman Post Office in 1941. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rossie Edwards; a son, R.A. Edwards; and two daughters, Miss Betty Edwards and Mrs. Philip Choate-all of Hickman. Other survivors are six grandchildren. Friends and relatives from Tennessee, Michigan and neighboring towns Kentucky attended funeral services of the large, good-humored writer whose folksy writing attracted readers of the Courier in many states. ************************************************************ Transcribed Union City Daily Messenger July 3, 1958 Alvin Edwards Dies of Injuries Alvin R. Edwards, a restaurant owner and substitute mail carrier of Hickman, died about 12:15 this afternoon in Obion County General Hospital. He was 59. Funeral arrangements, under the direction of Barrett Funeral Home of Hickman where incomplete. Mr. Edwards was admitted to the hospital last Tuesday after he fell from a ladder while he was working on the building housing his restaurant. He suffered injury to his rib cage. Mr. Edwards was born and reared in Dickson county, Tenn., but had lived in Hickman since 1919. In 1921, he was married to the former Miss Rossie Rambo of Hurricane Mills. He was the operator of Edwards Place in Hickman and carried mail on routes two and three from the Hickman post office. He was a Baptist. He leaves his wife; a son R.A. Edwards, in the U.S. Navy stationed at Norfolk, Va.; two daughters, Mrs. Bethel Choate of near Hickman and Miss Betty Edwards who makes her home with her parents; three brothers, Elmer Edwards and Emmett Edwards, both of Nashville, and Dan Edwards of Sylvia, Tenn., and two sisters, Mrs. Clara Hill of Nashville and Miss Suli Edwards of Louisville, Ky.
