FULTON DAILY LEADER Monday Afternoon, June 11, 1973 **************************** FOUR MEMBERS OF FAMILY DIE IN TRAIN-CAR CRASH **************************** Jerald Patterson, His Wife and Two Children killed instantly in Sunday Accident ------------------------------------------ Four members of a Fulton family were killed Sunday when their car was struck by a southbound Illinois Central Gulf freight train, at Beard's Crossing, a mile north of Sharon, Tenn., about 12:10 p.m. Sunday. They were enroute home after attending church at Fellowship Baptist Church, near Sharon. State Trooper Don Lovebless identified the dead as Gerald Wayne Patterson, 32; his wife Barbara Dale Patterson, 26; Richard Wayne Patterson, age 9 and a Carr Elementary 5th Grader, and Teresa Diane Patterson, age 2. Two other children, Terry Dale Patterson, 8 and Ronnie Eugene Patterson, 6 were seriously injured. Terry Dale is listed in fair condition in Volunteer Hospital at Martin and Ronnie Eugene Patterson was transferred to Baptist Hospital in Memphis, where his condition is listed as critical. All six members of the family were taken to the Volunteer General Hospital in Martin. Mr. Patterson died at 4:05 p.m., his wife died shortly after arrival at the hospital and the two children were killed instantly. The trooper said the crossing was marked with signs. Patterson was employed by Stanley Jones Mechanical Contractors, South Fulton. He had been working there for the past seven weeks. He and his family lived at 204 Fourth Street. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday Hornbeak Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Billy Coleman officiating. Interment will be at Greenlea Cemetery. Friends may call at Hornbeak Funeral Chapel after 4 p.m. today. Patterson was born in Hickman, Kentucky, the son of Mrs. Mary Burkeen Patterson of Union City and the late Sam Patterson. Besides his mother and two children, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Geneva Jones, Union City; three brothers, Jimmy Lloyd Patterson of Union City, David Patterson of Chicago and Billy Joe Patterson of Dresden. He and his wife were members were members of Fellowship Baptist Church, Sharon, and had lived in the Fulton area for about 10 years. His wife was born April 30, 1947 in Mississippi Co., Mo. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Bowlin of Fulton, Route $, survive. She also leaves two children, a sister Mrs. Wanda Sue Atkins of Kennett, Mo., five brothers, Robert Gale Bowlin, Clinton; Ray Bowlin, Martin; Don Bowlin, Sharon; Larry Bowlin and Gary Bowlin, both of Fulton.
