Russell "R.J" Stray, Jr., 57, a resident of Chicago, Ill, formerly of Hickman, died at 1:05 a.m., June 28, 1993, at University of Illinois Hospital in Chicago. Born Jan.13, 1936, in Caruthersville, Mo., he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Stray, Sr. He married Manon Rhodes on Oct.20, 1956. She died in 1986. He was a chemical engineer for the Borden Chemical Co., in Chicago, and went to Chicago from Hickman 30 years ago. He was a member of Johnson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Services were held at 2 p.m., July 4, at Johnson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Hickman, with the Rev. J. E. Green and the Rev. James Robertson officiating. Burial followed in Hickman City Cemetery. Pallbearers were Joe Cheirs, Rufus Nall, Marion Warren, Demus Winters Jr., Albert Dinwiddie and David Lee Winters, Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Gary Kinney, Tony Wilkins, William David, Conney Kinney, Vernon Kinney, James F. Kinney and Marvin Tucker. Vanderford Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Survivors include two daughters, Vanessa Zales Babers and Debra Robwell, both of Chicago; three sons, Kevin Andre Stray and Daryl Maurice Stray, both of Chicago and Robert Lewis Westbrook of Hickman; 13 grandchildren, one great grandchild; a brother, Willie B. Stray of Hickman; six sisters, Bessie Davis of Gary, Ind, Evanna Wilkins of Rantoul, Ill., Florence Tucker, Paulette Stray and Annie Russell Stray, all of Hickman and Norma Hunter of Clinton.
