Descendants of James Menees Generation No. 1 1. JAMES1 MENEES was born Abt. 1710 in County Antrim, Ireland, and died Abt. 1792 in Henry Co. Virginia. He married ELLEN CARDWELL. Notes for JAMES MENEES: James Menees, Sr. our immigrant ancestor. Nothing much has been determined to date about his ancestory however; it is believed that he is Scotch Irish. James married a second wife after the death of Ellen, however this was late in life and the wife was Margaret Allen. James, Sr., had moved into Virginia as the family gradually migrated and this was where he was living when he died. Daughter Eleanor Menees married William Whitsitt the 30 of May 1764 in Lebanon, Pa. Eleanor died on the 13 Sept. 1818 in Logan Co., KY. She is buried at the Breathitt Graveyard, Logan Co., KY. Of her children she had a daughter Elizabeth Dawson Whitsitt who married William Breathitt on Mar. 20. 1782. Their son, John Breathitt was a governor of Kentucky. He was born on the 9 September 1786 and died 21 February 1834. He was the 11th governor of Kentucky, serving from 4 September 1832 to 26 February 1834. He was the only Democrat of the first 17 Kentucky Governors (1792-1850). The first Kentucky governor to die in office and the last kentucky governor to have been forn our of state. His parents were William and Elizabeth Whitsitt Breathitt. Elizabeth's mother was Eleanor Menees Whitsitt. George Breathitt, brother to John Breathitt and a grandson of Elenor Menees Whitsitt was a private secretary to President Andrew Jackson. James Breathitt, grandson of Wleanor Menees Whitsditt was one of the most capable lawyers of his day and served as a Commonwealth's Attorney for many years. Children of JAMES MENEES and ELLEN CARDWELL are: i. ISAAC2 MENEES, b. Abt. 1738; d. Robertson CO. TN; m. NANCY COCHRAN1. 2. ii. BENJAMIN MENEES, b. Abt. 1743, Lebanon, Lancaster Co., Pa; d. She died Aft. 1811 in Robertson Co. Tn. Notes for BENJAMIN MENEES: Benjamin Menees and his brother James Menees, Jr. came into what is now middle Tennessee when that area was a part of North Carolina. There is strong evidence they came from Virginia with the Donaldson Party as James the son of Benjamin was listed as stearman on the boat that brought them from Virginia. Benjamin settled around Cedar Hill which is near Springfield, TN. He built a block house as protection from the Indians. He was appointed by John Sevier to help form the Government of Tennessee. Prior to that, he and one or two others walked to Fayetteville, North Carolina to ratify the constitution of the US making North Carolina a state. This was on November 21, 1789. In 1989 the Cumberland Genealogical Society was searching fore descendants of the delegates to the 1789 convention held in Fayetteville. At the convention, he would vote nay for the amendment that would have weakened the Constitution in favor of States' rights and then voted yea for the adoption of the Constitution. When the Cumberland Genealogical Society was contacted by our secretary about Benjamin Menees, they were thrilled. Benjamin was one of the delegates they had little information about other than the fact that he had attended the convention as a representative from Tennessee County. Benjamin Menees served with the Virginia Line during the Revolutionary War. Children of BENJAMIN MENEES and ANN WADE are: 5. i. JAMES3 MENEES, b. January 31, 1763, Amherst Co. VA; d.
