AZARIAH CRANDALL, SR. 1739-1808 by Billie (Mrs. Glynn) Bushart Azariah Crandall, Sr., a Revolutionary soldier, was born May 18, 1739 in Stonington, Connecticut and died February 10, 1808, at Dutchess County, New York. He was the son of Samuel and Sarah (Worden) Crandall. Samuel was the grandson of Elder John Cradall of Rhode Island who was a colonial pioneer, Firs Baptist Elder, Deputy Commissioner and statesman of Newport and Westerly, Rhode Island. He also was the head of the Crandall family in America. Elder John Crandall was born in Monomuthshire, England. Azariah married first Rebecca Reynolds at Stonington, Connecticut April 15, 1735. She was the daughter of James and Rebecca Reynolds. Rebecca Crandall was the mother of all of Azariah's children, namely: John, Sarah, Joseph, Elizabeth, Azariah, Jr. (our ancestor), William, Nathaniel, Olive and Reed. Azariah Sr. married second Mrs. Sarah (Carey) Stark, place and date unknown. Mrs. Stark was the daughter of Rev. Henry and Sarah Carey and widow of James Stark. Azariah, Sr., came to Beekman Precinct and Poughquay, Dutchess County, New York in 1774. He was a signer of the Articles of the Association of Dutchess County, New York. He was a private in the Dutchess County, New York militia, third Regiment, under Col. John Fields. For a while a Mr. And Mrs. (Hulda) Charles E. Foreman printed a booklet which they used for a Christmas card and it kept up the Crandall line currently, but one has not been received for several years.
