JAMES BATE (1747-1787) by Mrs. Hunter Byrd Whitesell Quoting from Jay Guy Cisco, who compiled a genealogical record of several Sumner County, Tennessee pioneer families, I find that "The Bate family came from Saxony and settled in Yorkshire, England early in the 16th century. Humphrey Bate, the ancestor of the American branch of the family, came to America at an early date and settled in Bertie County, North Carolina. "He married Sarah Legate, whose father had also emigrated from England. Their eldest, James, served throughout the War of the Revolution in North Carolina. James Bate was my great-great-great grandfather. An interesting sidelight of James Bate's record is that his son, Humphrey, married the granddaughter of Frank Weatherred, who was also a Revolutionary soldier and fought in the siege of Yorktown with Marquis de LaFayette. Frank Weatherred is also a direct ancestor of mine, being my great-great-great-great grandfather. (Mrs. Hunter B. Whitesell is the only member of the Jacob Flournoy Chapter DAR, who is descended from James Bate) Taken from the Fulton Daily Leader, Fulton, Kentucky, August 15, 1975.
