JOHN MEACHAM (1764-1823) by Mrs. M.W. Haws John Meacham was born October 12, 1764 in Caroline County, Virginia, the son of William Meacham and Betsy Brewer. The Meacham family had their origin in Scotland but later went to Sussex, England. Thereafter in the 17th century they migrated first to Massachusetts, then by way of Chatham County, North Carolina, to Virginia where they settled near a river in Williamson County, Virginia, which they named Meacham's River. John Meacham served three years in the Second Virginia Brigade, Eighth Continental line in the War of the American Revolution. Following John's marriage to Lucy Brewer, December 29th, 1785, they came first to Christian County, Kentucky, then in 1806 to Graves County where he purchased land that remained in the Meacham family until late in 1970. On that tract of land Meacham Manor became the residence of five generations to the Meacham family. John Meacham and his wife returned to Christian County where he died October 21, 1823. They had 12 children, one of whom was John Joseph, the a4th child, who remained in the Graves County home.
