SAMUEL BASS (1742-1793) by Mrs. Charles Wade Andrews Samuel Bass appears with the rank of Private on muster and payroll of Captain Nathaniel Belcher's Company in Colonel Jonathan Bass' Regiment. His Company assembled at Braintree, Massachusetts on June 13, 1776, and had orders to march to Horse Neck, Massachusetts. When the company arrived at Horse Neck, Private Bass was taken prisoner. He was imprisoned in the old Jersey Prison Ship for one year and then he was exchanged. At the time of his capture, Private Bass had been in the Army only four days. Samuel was the son of Ruth Alden and John Bass. Ruth Alden was the daughter of John Alden and Priscilla Mullens. These two were immortalized in "The Courtship of Miles Standish."
