Archive TOC Mrs. Helen Lillard Mountjoy, 86, died on Friday, December 25th 1988 at Bethesda Scarlet Oaks Health Center in Cincinnati. She had made her home for many years in the Victorian house she had restored on the Sparta Pike, Warsaw. Born in Gallatin County, She was the daughter of Cordelia Gardner and Charles Keene Lillard. She attended Eastern State Teachers’ College and subsequently taught at Carlisle School during her early life. The school was located on Montgomery Road near the Carroll County line. Mrs. Mountjoy maintained an avid interest in the Gallatin County schools and served 24 years on the School Boardd. During the later years, she was elected its chairman. Her organizational activities were many and included membership in the Gallatin County Historical Society; the Polly Hawkins Craig Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; and the Warsaw Woman’s Club, for which she served as president for one term. She was a member of the Warsaw Christian Church. Her lifelong interest in growing flowers and treess was legendary in Warsaw. Many came from far away to view her garden during the spring months each year when the dogwood was in bloom. She was active in restoring the Old Cemetery in Lower Warsaw. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Mountjoy, Jr., who died in 1952. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Payne Germanson of Memphis Tennessee; a son, James E. Mountjoy, of Cincinnati; four granddaughters and two great-grandsons. Five sisters and brothers also preceded her in death. Services were held Tuesday, December 29th, at the Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home with Rdev. Ron Zorn officiating. Burial was at Warsaw Cemetery. Paulbearers for Mrs. Mountjoy were Seibert Craig, Warsaw; C. William McDanell, Owenton; Kenneth McDanell, Owensboro; Joseph K. Lucas and Russel Horn, Covington; and James G. Germasnson, Memphis, Tennessee.
