Aug.10,1857, son of Jeremiah and Sally Morris Sparks, and passed away May 27,1946 at his home in Lancaster. He married Amanda Gilliam of Scott County, Va. He and his family moved to Garrard County in 1894. The Sparks first lived on a farm located at Wolf Trail in Garrard, and about 1920 moved to the Gunns Chapel area near Buckeye in the county. At that time J.R.Sparks opened a general store beside their home, known as Sparks store. The store operated from 1920--1945. In 1945, J.R. and Amanda Sparks move to Lancaster. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Glenn bought the farm and store, and later the store was moved, and became Stott's store, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Otis Scotts. Stotts Store was a popular and well know store at Gunns Chapel. J.R.Sparks was a member of the Baptist Church, and a devoted member of the Masonic Lodge. The Sparks had 11 children, with 3 to die in infancy. Their 8 children to live to adulthood were: Rebecca Sparks 1885-1973,married Tom Gay: Claude Sparks 1887-1960, married Addie Doolin, Lillie Sparks 1888-1963,married Herman Doolin, Ida Sparks 1892-1950,married Jess Casey, Zella Sparks 1894- 1980,married 1.Jim Hicks 2.Oliver Craig, Clorris Sparks 1898-1981,married Thelma Wheeler, Jennie Sparks 1900-1929,married Wm. Masters, and Clarence Sparks 1907-1979, married Hattie Price. Most of the family remained in Garrard County. J.R. and Amanda Sparks, along with most of their children are buried in the Lancaster Cemetery.
