Subject: [KYF] OBIT: Allan RANKIN, 2002, Boyle & Garrard Co. & Fl ------------------------------------------------------------ From the Danville Advocate Messenger, 29 Mar 2002 DADE CITY, Fla. --Allan Pershing Rankin, 83, of Dade City, Fla., died March 20. Born Nov. 17, 1918, in Lancaster, he was a 1940 graduate of Centre College where he was a member of Beta Theta Phi social fraternity. He served as second lieutenant in the National Guard and Army Air Corps and was a flight instructor and fighter pilot in the China, Burma, and Indian Theater during World War II. He later joined the Air Force Reserve and was a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the Korean War and was wing commander in the Vietnam War. He also served as commander of the U.S. Military Advisory Group in Bogota, Columbia. He retired in 1975 after being qualified to fly 45 different aircraft. He received the Legion Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Vietnamese Medal of Honor (First Rank), the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation and the Colombian Narino Order. Survivors include his wife, Glenn Shelley Rankin; three daughters, Kay Dyal of Tampa, Fla., Carol Rankin of San Antonio, Texas and Nancy Rankin of Dade City; three sons, Allan C. Rankin of Panacea, Fla., David P. Rankin of Tampa and Robert L. Rankin of Nashville, Tenn.; and 10 grandchildren. Hodges Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
