MARRIAGE RECORDS: WILLIAM ISAM AND BETSY COMPTON, 1801

Date: 23 June 1801

Know all men by these presents that we William Isam & William Edgerton do
promise to pay James Garrard, Esqr. Governor of Kentucky in the Just and
full sum of Fifty pounds Current money the payment of which well and
truely to be made we bind our selves and Each of our heirs & Jointly &
Severally firmly by these presents Sealed and Dated the 23rd June 1801.

The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a
marriage shortly intended to be solemnized between the above bound
William Isam & Betsy Compton for which a License has Issued now should
there be no Lawful Cause to Obstruct said marriage then the above
Obligation to be Void Else to remain in full force & virtue.

         I do hereby Certify that the Within named Betsy Compton is of
lawfull age to marry given under my hand this 23rd day of June 1801.

(Transcribed by Mary C. Smith from photocopies provided by the Garrard
County Court, Lancaster, Ky.  Note: the date on the bond might be read as
1807 rather than 1801; however in Zachariah Compton's will, written on 25
June 1804, he calls his daughter Elizabeth, "Betsy Ison.")
