WILLIAM CARNES, a prominent and successful lawyer, was born in Grant County, Ky., July 15, 1848, and is the eldest of twelve children, born to John and Sarah J. (Skirven) Carnes. John Carnes was born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, in 1820, came to Kentucky when he was twenty-six years of age and settled in Grant County where he has since lived. He was engineer on a boat that ran from Cincinnati, Ohio, to New Orleans, for several years, and was also in Joe Bell's machine shops, Cincinnati, for several years; he is also a miller by trade. He read law, and was admitted to the bar in 1872, and is now one of Grant County's leading lawyers, and also has farming carried on. During the war he was quartermaster in the Union Army from Kentucky. Mrs. Sarah J. Carnes was born in Grant County, Ky., and is a daughter of William and Mahala (Remington) Skirven. William Carnes was educated at the best schools in the county, taught school for one year, and spent most of his boyhood helping his father in the mill. He commenced to read law in 1874 under I. L. Schwabacker and O. D. McMannama; was admitted to the bar in October, 1876, and has been actively engaged at his profession ever since. He was married September 26, 1881 to Miss Anna, daughter of G. J. and Amanda (Powell) Burgess, of Grant County, three children have blessed this union--one living, Mabel R. Mrs. Carnes is a member of the Baptist Church. Mr. Carnes is politically a Republican.
