She had been bed-fast since early in August of 1938, and had been a most patient sufferer. Two weeks before she became bed-fast, her host of relatives and friends celebrated her 95th birthday anniversary on July 17 at Hickman Park in Owensboro. She went that day to the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Walter O'Connell in Hartford, Ky., where she visited for two weeks, making the return trip to Hawesville alone by bus. She was never able to be out of her room after that day. Mrs. Johnson was quite an interesting historian, being a great reader and having an unusual memory. It was her pleasure, as well as a great pleasure to all her friends, for her to tell of interesting events in the history of Kentucky, and of the Nation, that had taken place during her near century of life. She was born in 1843 in Ohio county, three miles south of Fordsville, in which community she spent her entire youth. Her mother died when she was 10 years of age, and this placed upon her the care of her younger brothers. When 21 years old, she married Calvin Johnson, a young groceryman of Fordsville, To this union, eight children were born, only two of whom are now living. She united early in life with the Baptist Church at Fordsville, later moving her membership to Bethlehem in this county, where it has been ever since. Mrs. Johnson was actively engaged in the affairs of life until six months ago, traveling much alone, from various homes of relatives, some quite distant. She loved everyone, and felt a great interest in all young people, as well as those of her generation. She kept informed on current affairs, and as long as she could talk, carried on a splendid conversation. She retained all her faculties and a rare sense of pride and politeness during all the conscious moments of her life, to within a few days of her death. Hancock County has lost a remarkable character, one who knew and accepted life in all its beauties and sufferings, ever a noble Christian lady no matter what befell her along her extended journey down the pathway of life. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Samuel Breidenbach and a son, Mr. John Johnson of Collinsville, Ill.; four granddaughters, Mrs. C. K. Lambert of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Joe Pell, Jr., of Lewisport and Misses Lillie and Lola Pulliam of Patesville, as well as several other granddaughters and grandsons, living in distant places; also a brother, Mr. J. C. Westerfield. Mr. G. C. Westerfield, who passed away on Feb. 10, 1938, was also her brother. The funeral will be held at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Fordsville at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, with internment in the Fordsville Cemetery.
