The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. http://www.usgwarchives.net *********************************************************************** The following letter is included in the pension file of John McCandless #W8441: July 14, 1933 Dear Madam: Reference is made to your letter in which you requested information in regard to John McCandless, a Revolutionary War soldier, who received pension while residing in Hardin County, Kentucky. The data furnished herein are obtained from the papers on file in Revolutionary War pension claim, W.8441, based upon the military service of John McCandless in that war. The date and place of birth and the names of the parents of John McCandless are not shown in the papers in the pension claim. He enlisted in the state of Virginia, in December, 1776, served in Captain John Hays' Company, Colonel George Mathews' 9th Virginia Regiment and was in the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Piscataway and at the capture of Burgoyne, and was discharged in December, 1777; he immediately re-enlisted and served in Captain George Gray's Company, Colonel Stephen Haylan's 4th Regiment of Dragoons, was in the battle of Monmouth and was discharged in December, 1780: the soldier stated that he was also at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis (no details of this service given) and that he received two wounds, one on the head from a British dragoon and one in the thigh by bayonet; the names of the engagements in which these wounds were received are not stated. He was allowed pension on his application executed June 27, 1818, at which time he was aged sixty-three years and resided in Hardin County, Kentucky. He died February 3, 1827, in said Hardin County. John McCandless married April 5, 1785, in Greenbrier County, Virginia, Jane or Jinney Mason, who was born May 3, 1764, place not stated. Soldier's widow, Jane, was allowed pension on her application executed October 16, 1839, while residing in Hardin County, Kentucky; in 1843, she was residing in Larue County, that part which had been lately separated from Hardin County. The names of the following children appear: Polly McCandless born September 2, 1786 Alexander McCandless " November 7, 1789, living in Hodgenville, Kentucky in 1853 William McCandless " February 21, 1792 Cynthia W. McCandless aged thirty-three years in 1839, and then residing in Hardin County, Kentucky It was stated that there were other children: their names are not shown. The first three oldest children. In 1839, the widow's sister, Mrs. Mary Burks was aged sixty-nine years and resided in Hardin County, Kentucky: in same year, her brother, John Mason also resided in Hardin County, and was aged sixty-eight. There are no further family data. In order to obtain the date of last payment of pension, the name and address of person paid, and possibly the date of death of the Revolutionary War pensioner, Jane McCandless, widow of John McCandless (W.8441), you should address the Comptroller General, General Accounting Office, Records Division, this cit, citing all the following data: Jane McCandless, Certificate No. 1989, issued September 14, 1843, rate $100 per annum, commenced Marc 4, 1843, Act of March (?), 1843, Kentucky Agency.
