Page 8-12 of 46: [Page 8] "State of Kentucky Nelson Circuit Sct I James Slaughter Jr Clerk of the Nelson Circuit do Certify that Alfred Metcalf Esqr whose name is Subscribed to the foregoing Certificate is Sole Judge of the Said Court in the Fifth Judicial District of Kentucky duly Commissioned and Sworn In Testimony whereof I have herewith set my name and Seal of Office at Bards Town this 2nd day of November Eighteen hundred and Eighteen and in the 27th Year of the Commonwealth. James Slaughter Jr Clk." [Page 9-10] "To the Hon. John C. Calhoun Secretary of the Department of War of the United States. I, Alfred Metcalf, circuit judge in & for the fifth judicial district of Kentucky and sole judge of the Hardin Circuit court in said District do certify that this day John McCandless came before me and declared under oath that he is a citizen of the United States & a resident of Hardin county aforesaid, that in December 1775 he enlisted as a soldier in the army of the revolution for two years, that he served as such in Capt. John Hayes' company in the ninth Virginia regiment on continental establishment commanded by Col. Geo. Matthews, until December 1777, when he enlisted for three years in the fourth regiment of Light Dragoons commanded by Col. Stephen Moyland; that he served in said regiment three years, and was then regularly discharged by Lieut. Col. Ben. Temple; that his discharge was lost by accident; that he was at the capture of Genl. Burgoyne & Lord Cornwallis, at the battles of Trenton, Princeton & Monmouth; that he was wounded in the head by a British dragoon and in the thigh by a bayonet; that the wound in the head is troublesome to this day; that he is so much afflicted with rheumatic pains that he cannot labour hard, that he is sixty three years of age, that he has never been allowed any pension under the ____ of the United States, and that from his reduced circumstances he needs the assistance of his country for support. Robert Kinkade also made oath before me that he knew that the said McCandless served about two years in the army of the revolution, during a part of the time they served in the same company; that he has lived a neighbor to said McCandless about seven years & is intimately acquainted with him & his circumstances in life; that said McCandless is not able to labour for a livelihood & has not property sufficient to support himself without labour. James Hornback also made oath before me that he has lived in the neighborhood of said McCandless about seven years, & is well acquainted with him & his circumstances in life; that said McCandless is unable to labour and has not property to maintain himself comfortably without labour. I do further certify, that from the appearance of said McCandless & and the testimony by him produced respecting his circumstances in life I believe that he needs the assistance of his country for support. Given under my hand this 27th day of June 1818, Alfred Metcalf." [Page 11-12] "State of Kentucky Hardin Circuit Sct June ____ 1820 Ordered that the following declaration affidavit and schedule be admitted to record having been sworn to in open court. Original Claim District of Kentucky Hardin County Circuit Sct. On this 16th day of June 1820 personally appeared in open court being a County of record for the County and for the District aforesaid, John McCandless aged sixty five years ____ being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provisions made by the acts of congress of the 18th of March 1818 and the 1st May 1820... that he continued to serve in the said corps until sometime in December 1780 when he was discharged from the said service in 1780 in the state of Pennsylvania ____ that he was at the Battle of Piscataway and at the Capture of Burgoyne then at the ____ battles of the taking of Burgoyne and the battle of Monmouth and the taking of Lord Cornwallis and that he has no other evidence now in his power of said service ...." Page 14 of 46: "State your place of residence and produce proof of service. State of Kentucky Hardin Co Circuit Sct Personally appeared before me the witness named John McCandless & made oath that his place of Residence is Hardin County Kentucky. Given under my hand as Circuit Judge in and for the 13th Judicial District of Kentucky this 14th day of March 1821. And said McCandless further states that he number of his pension Certificate, already granted is 17.301, and dated 3rd June 1820. Paul J. Booker." Intermingled with John's papers were found the Widow's application for pension, Jane (Mason) McCandless as follows: Jane was granted a pension of $100 per annum until her death for her husband John McCandless's military service during the Revolutionary War. Pension Application No. W.8441; Certificate No. 1969, issued September 14, 1843. Page 3 of 46: "Kentucky Jane McCandless widow of John McCandless who was a Private Dragoons in the Penn. line for 2 years ---------- Inscribed on the Roll at the rate of 100 Dollars ____ Cents per annum, to commence on the 4th day of March, 1843. ---------- Certificate of Pension issued the 14th day of Sept. 1843 and sent to C. H. Trabue Frankfort Ken. --------- [Act of March 3, 1843.] Recorded in Book A Vol. 1. Page 171. Page 15 of 46: "State of Kentucky) Sct County of Hardin ) On this the 16th day of October 1839 Personally appeared before me William E. Wilson a Justice of the peace in and for the County of Hardin and State aforesaid Jane McCandless a resident of Hardin County Ky aged Seventy four years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth, on her oath, make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed July 7 1838 entitled an act granting half pay and pensions to certain widows, That she is the widow of John McCandless late a pensioner on the roll of the Kentucky agency. She further declares she was married to the said John McCandless on the fifth day of April Seventeen hundred and Eighty five (1785) And that her husband the aforesaid John McCandless died on the Second day of February Eighteen hundred and Twenty Seven (1827), that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but the marriage took place previous to the first of January Seventeen hundred and Ninty-four Viz at the time above stated She further declars she was married to the said John McCandless in the County of Greenbrier in the State of Virginia by the Rev John McC[?]. She knows of no record of her marriage but has a record of the ages of her Children in a pocket book which record is in the hand writing of her Husband the said John McCandless. her Jane X McCandless mark." Page 21 of 46: "Revy WIDOW, etc. File No. 8441 Jane McCandless, Wid. of John McCandless, Pvt. Pa. line Act: Mch. 3"/43 Vol. M, Page 21." Page 22 of 46: "KENTUCKY 4943 Jane McCandless, widow of John McCandless, dec'd, who was a pensioner under the Act of 1818 and who died on the 2 February 1827 of Hardin Co in the State of Kentucky who was a private in the comp commanded by Captain Fountleroy Gray of the regt commanded by Col Moyland in the Pennsylv'a line for 2 yrs - private Dragoons. ---------- Inscribed on the Roll of Kentucky at the rate of 100 Dollars per annum, to commence on the 4th day of March, 1836. ---------- Certificate of Pension issued the 15 day of Jany 1840, & sent to Eli E. Ann Esq Harrodsburg, Ky. ---------- Arrears to the 4th of Sept 1839 $350.00 Semi-annual allowance ending 4 Mar 40 50.00 $400.00 Act July 7, 1838. Recorded by D. M.
