Bennett, Marshall A. and Mallie Musick, cemetery info., Harlan Co. Submitted by: Zen Sutherland DIRECTIONS: From South Clinchfield, VA go South on Rt 615 for about 3 miles. On the right is the entrance to Gravel Lick Church up a gravel drive. The cemetery is behind and around the church. ----- At the Gravel Lick Church Cemetery west of S. Clinchfield, I found this bit of Musick angst... It is on the largest headstone for one person that i've ever seen - taller than I am . It is beautifully carved and demarked by a cement divider around the headstone and grave site, and plantings of bushes. - zen The erection of this memorial was made possible thru contributions made by members of the United Mine Workers of America, Districts 19, 23, 28 & 30. --- MUSIC, Bennett J. Jul 1, 1917 - Feb 9, 1937 --- In memory of Bennett Musick assasinated Feb 3, 1937 by Deputy Sheriffs of Harlan County, Paid by the coal operators serving under Theodore Middleton, Sherriff, while in the presence of his mother in his home at Evarts, KY. The assisins, by their rifle fire, evidently intended to kill Marhall Musick, the father of the deceased, organizer for the United Mine Workers of America. [double stone] Marshall A.
