Subject: George Hopkins Union Pension - Bell/Harlan Co, KY Submitted By: G1074UK@aol.com Date: 30 April 2002 ON December 31, 1879, George Hopkins (GH) appeared before the Deputy Clerk of the Bell Circuit Court at the age of 54 and filed a DECLARATION FOR ORIGINAL INVALID PENSION.(his Post Office address is given as Callaway, Bell County). He states that he was a Corporal in Company E of the 49th Regiment of the KY Volunteers commanded by Col. J.G. Eve. He was enrolled on July 20, 1863 and was honorably discharged at Lexington, KY on December 26, 1864. He is described as 5'10" in height with fair complexion and hair and blue eyes. While at Camp Nelson (Sept. 15, 1863) he became ill. A few months later he became ill again at Somerset, KY and was cared for there at the Regimental Hospital under the care of Henry C. Miller, Sergeant of Regiment. The claim is witnessed by Wilson B. Saylor and John. A. Watkins. Paperwork from the Adjutant General's Office dated, March 20, 1882, reports that GH was enrolled on July 20, 1863 at Harlan Co. and was reported on the Muster Roll at Camp Nelson, KY as a Corporal on Sept. 20, 1963 through Feb. 29, 1864. March and April 1864 he is found as present with the remark "Deserted April 4, 1864 at Camp Burnside". May and June 1864 name not there. July & Aug 1864 present, with remark " to forfeit 1 month pay for absence without leave from April 4 - July 9, 1864". Present to Oct 31, 1864 and as a Private, Dec 26, 1864. According to another paper from the AJ's office he was courtmartialed for his desertion, found guilty and sentenced to forfeit 1 months pay. Proceedings were approved by Major General Burbridge. On Nov. 9, 1899, GH (resident of Wallins Creek, Harlan Co., KY) applied for a pension with the Dept. of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions for his service. Within the application he states that he is married to Elizabeth Hopkins, maiden name Saylor. He was married to her in Harlan Co., by John Jones. He was not previously married. He lists his living children and their ages as follows: Joseph Hopkins 40 years old John " 44 " Lessey " 37 " (not sure who's nickname this is) Rindy " 32 " Jaby 37 " His pension was was last paid to him on Nov. 4, 1901 and dropped due to his death on Nov. 18, 1901. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~On Nov. 29, 1901, Elizabeth Hopkins (EH) appeared to the clerk in Harlan Co. and applied for her widows pension. She states her age as 73(this would make her birthdate about 1828) and her residence as Layman PO, Harlan Co. She states that she is the widow of GH (his service dates are again confirmed), that he was honorably discharged on Dec. 26, 1864, at Lexington, KY. She also states that he died on Nov. 18, 1901 of liver disease, epilepsy and chronic diarrhea (note: these are the same ailments for which he was treated during his service) at his home in Harlan Co. She further states that she was married to GH as Elizabeth Saylor, on Nov. 26, 1844 or 1846 by John Jones, Justice of the Peace at Martin Saylor's house. Her attorney in the matter was E.M. Howard of Baxter, KY. A General Affidavit was given on her behalf by Sally Saylor, age 68 and Nancy Osborn, age 71 on January 3, 1902. In the Affidavit, they confirm what EH had already stated in her application. Additionally, they state that they were present at the marriage ceremony of GH & EH at Martin Saylors house. The document closes with the fact that Sally Saylor is a sister to EH. The document is witnessed by HB Howard and Mollis Howard and was notorized by EV Fee. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In Harlan on Jan. 17, 1917, Jaby Hopkins, age 45 files an Application for Reimbursement for taking care of his mother. The pension was last paid Feb. 4, 1915. He states that he was the son of EH & GH. He also states that at the time her death, EH had no property, real or other wise. He further states that he and his wife Ellie had taken care of EH at their home near Layman, KY, since the time of her sickness on July 15, 1915 until her death about Feb. 16, 1916. He requests reimbursement for clothes, lumber for her coffin and other care provided to her by he and his wife. JH Howard and Laura Howard witness that Jaby & Ellie took care of EH. The Deputy Clerk was N? Howard. She was attended by Dr. Jacob Brock of Layman who states her cause of death as diabetes of the kidneys. Medicine was obtained by Jaby from Dr. GS Callaway of Wallins Creek.
