Mrs. Gross was born and reared in Harlan County, and is survived by three sons and three daughters, ranging in ages from 49 years to 76. All her children are living but one, Morgan, who was killed thirty years ago in a feud in Harlan County. At the time of her death Mrs. Gross was active, her eyesight was unimpaired and she ate heartily. She did not believe in doctors, nor the "new fangled ideas" used by doctors. She brewed her own medicine from herbs and roots, and had been ill but few times in her life. Her husband, John Gross, died seventeen years ago at the age of 79. Mrs. Gross was born in 1826 on Jess Creek, near Layman, Ky. She was a young woman at the time of the Mexican War, and remembered events in the country at that time. She lived here when the territory was literally a wilderness and before Harlan County was formed. Even Mary J. Gross, 76, the oldest child, remembers the Civil War. The children living are Mary J. Gross 76, Cargo: Richard 70, Cargo: Sabra Gross 50, Knoxville, Tennesse: W.M. 56, Cargo: Frank, 53 and Nancy Long 49, Wallins. Funeral services will be held at the home on Watts Creek. ***************************************************************************** USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities as long as this message remains on all copied material.
