Harrison County On this the 14th day of January 1833 personally appeared in open court before Mrs. E. Worthen, Wm. Marshall, Wm. Brown and Joel Frazier, Justices of the county aforesaid now siting, James Furnish a resident of Gallatin County in the Commonwealth aforesaid aged 69 years who being duly sworn according to the Law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That according to his family register he was born in Orange County in the State of Virginia on the 14th day of May 1763. That some time about the first of September 1780 he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. At the time aforesaid, he was drafted from the County and State in which he was born for three months and served with Ensign Richard White, Lt. Belfield Cave, under Capt. Benjamin Johnson of the Va. Militia, attached to the 5th Regiment commanded by Col. Holt Richardson of the Regular Army in Gen'l Nelson's Brigade. With the officers aforesaid he joined the Va. Troops at Richmond; from where he marched to Cabbin __ Point; from thence to Petersburg in Va.; from thence he was marched back to Richmond where he remained until sometime in Dec after his full term of service had expired he received his discharge and returned home. Again in the month of May 1781 he was drafted from the county and state last named for three months and served under Captain Richard Webb with Lt. Smith and Ensign James Coward attached to the fourth Regt. Virginia Militia commanded by Col left blank Edmonds of the Regular Army. We joined the Army at Richmond, Va. We marched to the Racoon Ford on the Rapahannock River, where we were joined by Gen'l Anthony Wayne and the whole army then together commanded by the Marquis LaFayette. We then marched back to Richmond, the British having just moved out and left the ware-houses and tobacco burning. From Richmond we pursued the British to old Jamestown, where Gen'l Wayne gave them a battle. From thence we went to a place called Mothers Hills; where he lay until his term of service expired. He then received his discharge and went home. He verily believes he served upwards of six months in the two tours aforesaid and that he has lost the discharges or certificates of said service and has no documentary evidence to prove the same. He further states that he lived in the county and State in which he was born until A.D. 1784 when he removed to Kentucky where (except on the numerous campaigns he served against the Indians) he has remained ever since. I James Furnish do hereby relinquish every claim whatever to a pension except the present and declare that my name is not on the pension roll of any agency in my State or Territory whatever. Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid. (Signed) James Furnish Page 2 We William Moore and Larkin Garnett _______ residing in Harrison County and State of Ky. do hereby certify that we are well acquainted with James Furnish who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration; and we believe him to be 69 years of age; that he is respected and believed in the neighbourhood where he resided to have been a revolutionary soldier and we concur in that opinion.
