The Middlesboro Record has an extended notice concerning the death of Jeff Gray, known in this county, and briefly noted in the Berry correspondence. We clip: "A gloom is cast over Middleboro today because of the sad death of Jeff, the eldest son of Mr. & Mrs. S. B. Gray of this city. The unfortunate accident which resulted in the sudden death of one of the brighteet and manliest boys of Middlesboro early last night July 11 occurred at the camp of the "Keeney Boys" on Powell's River, near Lone Mountain, TN. A small rife was brought into use in playing a practical joke and in the scuffle which followed the rifle was fired and the bullet striking young Gray in the cheek ranged up and penetrated the brain. He was brought to Middlesboro on a special train this morning but died shortly after reaching home. Jeff Gray was one of the brighest boys that Middlesboro has ever produced and his untimely taking off just as his feet were place upon the threshold of young manhood, is especially sad; with his pleasing address, his polished manners, and his great energy combined with application to duty and a retentive memory, the boy's future was assured.
