J. Cummins, "Uncle Dick" died at Harrison Hospital Tuesday from the infirmities of old age. He was 91 years old the first day of September. Nearly all of his long life was spent in Cynthiana and was consequently well known to the people of town and county. He was a cabinet maker and in his younger years he was an undertaker. He was married twice. His first was Miss Cummins, a cousin. She died about 50 years ago and was buried in the old cemetery near the head of Main Street. A few years ago the body was moved to Battle Grove. While a new box was being made the metallic case remained at R. B. Whaleys undertaking establishment. The lid over the glass plate was removed, and Mr. Cummins looked again into the face of his wife after she had been dead nearly 50 years. The body was perfectly preserved and the face was as natural looking as when she died. "Uncle Dick's" second wife was Mrs. Stewart, the mother of Miss Mary Steward that the late Col. Crane. She has been dead a number of years. Mr. Cummins only child was "Epsey," who died several years ago. He was by Mr. Cummins' first wife. "Uncle Dick" spent the last year of his life at the Hospital where he was well cared for. His estate consists of a small piece of property on the square facing the north side of the courthouse. The funeral took place from the Christian Church this morning at 10 o'clock. Burial in Battle Grove. Bush of Idaho Springs, Idaho were married at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. & Mrs. Edward Bair, on North Main Street of this city. Rev. Cary F. Moore, of the Presbyterian Church said the ceremony. Mr. Bush is the president of the First National Bank of Idaho Springs. Blanton - Bowen Miss Mary Irvine Blanton, daughter of Mr. & MR. J. I Blanton formerly of this city was married in Washington City, Wednesday last week to Mr. Hedley McNeer Bowen, the son of a wealthy coal operator of Virginia. Charlottesville Va. Daily Progress, Oct 19. "Mr. Hedley McNeer Bowen of Freeman, W. Va. Captian of the varsity football team at the University, surprised his friends yesterday by eloping wit Miss Mary Irvine Blanton, formerly of the University, but more recently of Lexington, VA where she was residing with her mother, Mrs. Sallie Blanton. Miss Blanton came to Charlottesville on Monday to visit her sister, Miss Elizabeth Blanton, and yesterday afternoon was joined at Main Street Station by Mr. Bowen. They took the local train for Washington. The couple was accompanied to the Capital City by Mr. Bowen's Friend and fraternity mate, Mr. John Depert, of Hollidaysburg, PA and were married in the Presbyterian Church of which the Rev. Wallace Radcliff is pastor." Thorn - Rose Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Alexander Thorn have issued cards for the marriage of their daughter, Jennie, to Mr. Obir Leonidas rose, on the afternoon of 8 November. Mr. Rose and his bride will be at home to their friends at Fremont, NC. The wedding will be very quiet owing to recent deaths in the connection and only near relatives, neighbors and friend have been invited. North - Grayson Thos. North and Miss Edna Grayson were married in this city yesterday. Marshall - Stakelin Miss Annie Marshall, daughter of Benj. Marshall of Oddville, and Mr. Will Stakelin were married last evening at the residence of Will Gibson on North Main street. Rev. Cary F. Moore, officiated. Hatfield - Hickman Orie W. Hatfield and Miss Elizabeth Hickman, daughter of J. T. Hickman were married Tuesday. Bowe - Toadvine Keller Bowe and Miss Sallie Toadvine, daughter of J. T. Toadvine were married at the bride's residence yesterday. Shropshire - VanDeren Mr. & Mrs. Walter Shropshire of Georgetown announce the engagement of their daughter, Anna Mai, to Mr. William Wilson VanDeren of Cynthiana. The married will take place in early December. Miss Shropshire is a sister of Messrs. Earl and J. J. R. Shropshire of this city. Mr. VanDeren is a young lawyer, member of the city council and one of Cynthiana's most popular and highly esteemed young men. Burns and Mrs. Martha Burns Conner attended the funeral of their relative, Mrs. Lousia Burns, at Cynthiana Oct. 14. Cynthiana Democrat Thurs 26 Oct 1911 Vol. 44 No. 5 Pg. 2 Col. 3 Note from Mr. Mullen Abingdon, VA. Oct 13th. . . . It fell to my lot on the 15th of September to help lay away in his last resting place inthe Sinking Spring Cemetery in Abingdo, VA, James A. Barnett, member of the Orphan Brigade, Co. D, 9th Regiment Volunteer Kentucky Infantry. He was a truly loyal Rebel to the end." When I was last in Cynthaina he had several old comrades living there: Oscar Kennard, Jim Taylor and Dick Wall, that I can call to mind now. He never tired talking about Dr. Beale, his old Captain. Cynthiana Democrat Thurs 26 Oct 1911 Vol. 44 No. 5 Pg. 2 Col. 3 Selma Born to wife of Mr. Wm. Sipples, nee Miss Lina Hutchison, a daughter. An eccentric man. - William L. Collins, born in Bourbon Co. 6 Jun 1835, married Martha J. Bowles also of Bourbon Co. She died 8 Aug 1910. Mr. Collins never wears an overcoat nor carries an umbrella. He often walks to Millersburg and to Ruddell's Mills. One could stand in Ruddell's Mills and count the smoke rolling from 14 distilleries was never drunk or never took but one drink in a bar room. Reads and writes without glasses. Remembers when pure old copper whiskey retailed at 25 cents a gallon. Is the father of four children, three now survive and reside in Paris, known as: Mrs. Fannie Miller, Mrs. Lizzie Hopper and Mrs. Mattie Hall. He also has 11 grandchildren. Subject of this notice is son of late Willis D. Collins and has just erected a handsome monument in Millersburg Cem. Remembers the first monument erected in that cemetery was to memory of late Million Jameson. (Believe this to be the father of George Harper's wife and the name was misspelled above. dh) Cynthiana Democrat Thurs 26 Oct 1911 Vol. 44 No. 5 Pg. 3 Col. 2 Morningglory Mamie Lee Wagoner, age 8 years, 7 months and 5 days, daughter of Charley Wagoner, died 21 Oct 1911. Her demise adds another victim to the long list of the Great White Plague. Buried at Mt. Pleasant. Cynthiana Democrat Thurs 26 Oct 1911 Vol. 44 No. 5 Pg. 7 Col. 1 Our Neighbors Grant Co. James Tapp, formerly of Corinth, dropped dead at Huntington, WV. Scott Co. Barney J. Laughlin, for many years a citizen of White Sulphur Springs precinct Scott County died in Cincinnati, Saturday where he had made his home for several years. Age about 75. Married: Oscar Steele and Lena Hady; J. B. Young and Eliza D. Kelly; J . B. Blythe and Hallie May House. Pendleton Co. A beautiful wedding occurred at Butler Wednesday afternoon at the Christian Church when Mr. Carl Myers of Oklahoma City and Miss Edna Williams Grant were married. C. H. McMillin and Miss Emma Boone were married at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. & Mrs. G. H. Boone, near Gardnersville. Henry Streuble, of Carntown this county and who has relatives here, committed suicide Saturday by firing a bullet into his brain. Some weeks ago his wife filed divorce proceedings against him and this is thought to be the cause of his rash act. Mr. Streuble was about 50 years of age and a blacksmith by trade. Templin, Miss Fairie June Templine and Mr. Feilden Edward Falukner, were married by Eld. Carey E. Morgan. Miss Cora Link and Mr. George Determan, both of Paris were married in Nicholasville. Miss Julia Brophy and Mr. D. J. Mahany were married at the Catholic Church in Paris on Oct. 25th. Rev. Father Eugene DeBruyn officiating. Born at Spears Mill to the wife of Alva Thomas a son. In Paris to the wife of Mr. Walter L. Roberts, a son; third born. At the home of Mr. & Mrs. Thos. Henry Clay on Pleasant street Wednesday morning, Mr. Clay Wilcox and Miss Carrie Risor, were united in marriage by Eld. Carey B. Morgan. Robert B. Forsythe, age 59, died Thursday at his home in Louisville following a forty-eight hour illness of meningitis. Born in Millersburg, Bourbon Co. but left Paris a quarter of a century ago to locate in Louisville. Mr. Forsythe was the brother of Mr. Joseph Forsythe of Washington, DC and a half brother of Mr. Mason Forsythe of near Kiserton. The late Col. A. T. Forsythe of Paris was also a brother of the deceased. Robertson Co. Mr. Belva Merrill, aged 21, of Robertwson County and Miss Myrtle Craycraft, aged 16, of Bracken county were married. Born to wife of Albert Robinson on Friday, 13th inst. A daughter, Emma Lee. Nicholas Co. Mr. Robert Lee Norton, son of William Norton, a prominent farmer of near Carlisle, and Miss Maybelle Edwards Grimes, formerly of Carlisle but now of Mt. Sterling were married in that city. Rev. Mr. Clark officiating. Born to the wife of Owne Earlywine, a girl: to the wife of Enoch Jones, a daughter: to the wife of Charles Kerns, a daughter.
