DAVIS was born April 21, 1837, in Hart County, Ky., on the same farm where he now resides. His father, John Davis, was born February 3, 1801, in Monmouth County, N. J., where he grew up and when a young man removed to Chillicothe, Ohio, where he remained for two years apprenticed at a puddler's trade, and from thence came to Kentucky, to superintend the furnace on Brush Creek, Green County; he died in February, 1874. His father, the grandfather of De Witt C., was Daniel Davis, a teamster and fisherman and later in life a farmer, and of English and Scotch extraction. John Davis married, about 1830, Elizabeth Patton, of Green County. From this union sprang Mary (Weller), Sarah A. (Williams), De Witt C., Josephine (Witt), John J. C., Elizabeth (Snoddy), Laura (deceased) and Alexander T. De Witt C. Married, April 18, 1861, Martha A. daughter of William R. and Mary J. (Walthall) Gum, of Green County, Ky. From this union sprang John J. C., Mary E. (deceased), Sarah J., De Witt C., Jr., William, Eleanor, Mattie N, Edward T., Claude, Vorie and Laurence (deceased). Mr. Davis began life as a farmer, in which business he has since engaged, and by close attention to business he has become the owner of 257 acres of land in a fine state of cultivation.
