EDWARDS, M.D., was born in Barren County, Ky., May 29, 1840, and is the sixth of ten children born to Isaac N. and Annie E. (Bohannon) Edwards, natives of North Carolina and Lunenburg County, Va. They were of Welsh-Irish and Holland descent, respectively. When only some ten or twelve years old, Isaac N. Edwards removed with his parents from North Carolina to Barren County, Ky., where the family were among the first comers; here young Isaac was employed on the old home farm until he attained his majority, after which he bought wild land in the same county, and improved a farm, upon which he resided until 1865, when he sold out and came to Horse Cave, this county, where he lived a retired life until his death, October 5, 1868, in his sixty-eighth year; he served as magistrate in Barren County for eight years, and for two years in Hart County; he was an officer in the old State militia from early manhood until the beginning of the late civil war, ranking as adjutant of a regiment. He and were from early life zealous and devoted members of the Missionary Baptist Church, in which church he officiated as deacon and clerk for many years. Mrs. Annie E. Edwards departed this life January 30, 1875, in her sixty-eighth year. Her father, Joseph Bohannon, was a native of the Old Dominion, and was also one of the pioneers of Barren County, Ky.; he was a veteran and pensioner of the Revolution and received for his services a large tract of land in Kentucky. Dr. Martin V. Edwards was employed on his father's farm until he was eighteen years old, when he commenced the study of medicine under the protectorship of his brother, Dr. W. T. Edwards, of Three Springs, Hart County. In August, 1862, he enlisted as a private soldier of Company I, Ninth Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry (Confederate service), commanded by CO. W. C. P. Breckinridge, and served until the close of the war, riding the same horse home with which he started out. He then engaged in the drug trade at Horse Cave, which he continued until 1872; he then attended lectures at the Medical Department of the University of Louisville, graduating with high honors with the class of 1878. Since that time he has practiced his profession at Horse Cave, having secured a large and lucrative practice. He was married, October 19, 1880, to Mrs. Lissie G. (Smith) Richey, a native of what is now Metcalfe County, Ky., and a daughter of George W. and Margaret A. (Neal) Smith. Mrs. Edwards is a devoted member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
