Gaddie Compton Highbaugh Bragg Bell Everett = VA TX Larue-KY **** Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1885, Hart County. ROBERT B. GADDIE, a leading farmer, was born November 30, 1834, in Hart County, and is the fifth in a family of two boys and five girls born to Jesse and Martha (Compton) Gaddie, natives, respectively, of Virginia and Kentucky. Jesse Gaddie was a son of William Gaddie, was a slave holder and an early settler of Hart County, where he died in 1860, aged sixty-five years, three months and twenty-five days. Mrs. Martha Gaddie was a daughter of Joel Compton and Mary Taylor, both natives of Virginia. Robert B. Gaddie was reared to farming, and by walking three miles to and from school secured a good education, which enabled him to teach two or three terms. At the age of nineteen he went to Texas, traveled through that State for two years, and then returned to within six miles north of Munfordville, and resumed farming. December 11, 1862, he married Miss Martha E. Highbaugh, daughter of David and Elizabeth (Brown) Highbaugh, of Hart County, and of German descent. To Mr. Gaddie have been born eleven children, ten of whom are living: William R., Lee H., Maggie T., Lewis J., Elizabeth H., Christiana T., Bell B., Henrietta E., Edith and Geneva M. After marriage, Mr. Gaddie lived for a time on Bacon Creek, then moved to La Rue [sic] County, but in 1872 returned to Hart and settled on 155 acres, which he has since increased to 343 acres and improved with first-class buildings. He is also the owner of 154 acres in another locality. During the war Mr. Gaddie was a guide for a portion of Bragg's army, and was badly wounded in a skirmish. In politics Mr. Gaddie is a Democrat, although he cast his first presidential vote for Bell and Everett. He was once a Granger, and with his wife is a member of the United Baptist Church. -------------------------------- End of KYBIOGRAPHIES-D Digest V97 Issue #48 ******************************************* **************************************************************************** USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities as long as this message remains on all copied material.
