GRINSTEAD was born August 15, 1844, in Munfordville, Ky., grew to manhood in Hart County, and in 1874 located in the northern part of Metcalfe County, where he has since resided. In 1862 he enlisted in Company G, Third Kentucky Federal Cavalry, and remained in the service six months. His father, Joseph Grinstead, a native of Kentucky, died in Hart County, November, 1850. He was the son of Henry Grinstead, who was born near Richmond, Va.; a soldier in the war of 1812; was an extensive land owner and slave owner, near Horse Cave, Ky., where he died, about 1858, aged nearly eighty years. Joseph Grinstead married Sarah J., daughter of Richard Woodward, of Green County (born 1812, now living), and from their union sprang Richard H., of Texas; Francis M., James K. (killed in army), Ermine E. (Owen), Emma A. (Owen), and Mary J. (Jackson). Mrs. Grinstead's second husband is Andrew Jackson, and their daughter is Annie Jackson. Squire Grinstead being left an orphan had very limited school privileges, but after his return from the army, while clerking in a store, applied himself nights and mornings to hard study for two years, after which he attended the high school at Canmer, and by close application has secured a good English education, with a knowledge of higher mathematics. On April 13, 1876, he married America R., daughter of James and Susan (Kelley) Withers, of Metcalfe County (born January 2, 1856), and to them have been born Clarence L., Daisy E. and Francis E. Squire Grinstead has served as magistrate and member of the court of claims of Metcalfe County for about eight years, and still retains that honorable position. For twenty years he has been engaged in general merchandise, and has met with encouraging success in his business. He and others have just completed a merchant mill at Horse Cave, which bids fair to be a profitable investment. In addition to his other duties he is a licensed attorney, and attends to some business in that line. He is a Royal Arch member of the Masonic fraternity, also a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and in politics is a Republican.
