Tucker Smith, Shawnee Mission, KS (Continued from Part 1) Elijah returned to Greensburg (KY) after discharge from army and went into grocery business as partner of bro.-in-law, John A. Tresenriter. 10/4/1865 m. to "one of the best women I ever saw", George Ann Wheat, d/o Dr. Vernon A. & Elizabeth B. Wheat (nee Owens,sister/o Wm., Samuel, Jerry & Joshua Owens, and Mrs. Nancy Jane Moore of Adair Co.). Dr. Wheat was s/o Otho Wheat (Green Adair Counties) and had 2 bros, Sinclair & Dr. Ben F. Wheat and 2 sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Biggs (wife/o Rev. Ben F. Biggs) and Louise Wheat (d. unmarried). Their mother was a Stapp (AKA Stepp). Sinclair Wheat was clerk of Adair Co. court for long time; Dr. Ben Wheat moved to Carrollton, MO; practiced medicine and died there. "Georgie" Wheat had 5 sisters & 2 bros: Lucy (Puss) Wheat (m. Andrews Bowling, d. near Harrodsburg, KY); Nannie E. (m. Joe W. McClaim, both d. near Moody, TX); George Ann was 3rd dau; Louise (m. Dan P. Tucker, both d. Green Co., KY); Otho W (d. in TX); Richard M. (lived in Perryville, KY); Katherine P. (m. Clint Helm, he d. @ Junction City, KY, then she lived after his death @ Danville, KY); Julia F. (m. Chas. D. Banta). 1867(autumn) Elijah bought Wm. Bottom farm (3 mi. SW of Greensburg) and moved there; was a fairly successful farmer. 1869 he was appointed US Storekeeper in the IRS and moved family to Fairfield, KY. 1876 was appointed US Gauger. 1878 he resigned from IRS and returned to farming. Served as town marshal of Greensburg 1866-67; Justice of Peace for short time also. 1884 elected as the first Supt. of Schools for Green Co.; served 2 years; defeated by J. L. Wilson. Was Co. Chairman for Republican Committee; resigned 1889. July 1889 appointed Div. Deputy Collector for IRS and lived in Lebanon for more than 2 yr. In 1895, children of age, sold farm and moved to Greensburg to educate daughters. 7/1/1897 was Postmaster @ Greensburg, KY till 4/30/1914 ("turned out by Pres. Wilson, being a Republican"). Was clerk for Russell Creek Assn. for 25 yr. & Moderator of same for 6 yrs; active/working member of Grand Army of the Republic for 40 yr.; served as Quartermaster Gen. of the! Dept. of KY GAR; a delegate to Nat'l Encampment of GAR; Commander of Dept. of KY GAR. Served the US in these several capacities 31 years. Serve his (Church) Assn. as clerk & moderator for 31 yr. 10 children: 1. Nannie Iona, b. 8/8/1866 (m. Charley Ed. Blakeman) d. 5/1922 (tuberculosis) 2. William Vernon b. 12/15/1867; practiced medicine and operated hosp. @ Elkhart, KS 3. John Otho, b. 1/17/1870; lived in Elkhart, KS 4. Schuyler Thomas, b. 2/7/1872, farmer in OK near Elkhart, KS 5. George Robert, b. 4/19/1874, farmer near Greensburg, KY 6. Elijah Menifee, b. 6/29/1876, d. 2/9/1878 7. Leona May, b. 11/16/1878, d. 10/13/1879 8. Julia Mabel, b. 11/21/1880 (m. J. Frank Cowherd) lived in Greensburg, KY 9. Lucy Berry, b. 6/30/1883 (m. Wm. A. Calhoon) d. 10/20/1814 (tuberculosis) 10. Gracie May, b. 11/9/1887 (m. James H. Smith) d. 10/22/1918 @ Pennington Gap, VA ("flu") Had 39 grandchildren and 15 g-grandchildren as of 3/1924. "The foregoing was written from memory and there may be some mistakes.
