During the course of these letters John mentions his wife, Caroline, and the names of their 6 (at that time) children. He speaks of relatives, his business enterprise, his hopes for a steamer to ply the Green River in the future. He mentions the "colry" (cholera) "raging in Louisville". He also mentions Reuben (last name not given, but obviously known to John's parents, Reuben's daughters Betsy and Ann, and the existence of the temperance movement at the time.
