JOHN FLANIGAN, Pension Application, residing Caverna, Hart Co., KY Submitted by Peg & Les Ruble Source - National Archives, Civil War Pension Application Papers, Claim #187,227, dated 16 May 1874: JOHN FLANIGAN (son of Bryant Andrew Flanagan and Sophia Sample Green Flanagan) born ca 1841, Barren Co., Ky, died 08 Feb 1874, Caverna, Hart Co., KY. Condensed extract: John Flanigan enrolled on 04 Oct 1861 at Camp Andy Johnson in Co. "H", 21st Regiment of Kentucky volunteers to serve 3 years or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on 30 Dec 1861 at Camp Ward. He was appointed Corporal on 06 Jan 1865 and reduced to ranks 30 Apr 1865 at his own request. John was honorably discharged on 09 Dec 1865. He contracted chronic diarhea in January 1862 near Columbia, Adair Co., KY and was treated at two hospitals (Bardstown, KY and Columbia, TN) during his service. He never fully recovered and died from same. He applied for disability after his discharge while living near Caverna, Hart Co., KY near his family. His description at discharge was: Age 35, Ht 5ft 4in, complexion sallow, eyes-gray, hair-light. Dr. A. R. Scruggs of Caverna, Hart Co., KY submitted an affidavit confirming his illness, death and birth of two daughters (Lilly Belle b 21 Jan 1869 Hart Co, Ky, md James Acklen, Izard Co., AR; and Rosey May b 04 Feb 1872 Hart Co, Ky md Sam Pogue Izard Co., AR). After his death, his widow, Mariah E. KIDD, applied for and received a pension until her death on 18 Apr 1919 at Wiseman, Izard Co., AR where she was living with her daughter, Mrs Sam Pogue. In the pension application papers she gave her date of marriage as 11 Jan 1864, married by I. N. Brown, Baptist Minister, Hart Co., Ky. His application was witnessed by Claibourne J. Walton and Francis A. Allen, residents of Hart Co., Kentucky on 11 Oct 1873. J. M. Brents, Clerk of Hart County Court. Bryant Andrew FLANAGAN filed twice submitting papers for pension for service in the War of 1812. The first papers: State of Kentucky County of Hart On this 10th day of April, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and Seventy eight (1878) personally appeared before me, Clerk of the County court, the same being a Court of Record within and for county and Stae aforesaid, Bryant A. Flanagan, aged 84 years, a resident of Caverna, in the County of Hart, in the State of Kentucky, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Bryant A. Flanagan, who served under the name of Bryant A. Flanagan as a private in the company commanded by Captain Samuel Bryson, in the regiment of _____(blank), commanded by Col. Miller in the war of 1812; that he enlisted at Newport, KY on or about the __ day of May, A.D. 1813, for the term of 18 months and continued in actual service in said war for the term of about 17 months and was honorably discharged at Fort Cleveland Ohio on the ___ day of October A.D. 1814. That since his discharge from said service he has rresided as follows, viz: "from 1814 to 1829 in Campbell County Kentucky, from 1829 to 1860 I lived in Barren County Ky. and since that time in Hart County Ky where I reside at the present time. The following was his description at the time of his enlistment, viz: "5 feet 8 inches high, Brown hair, blue eyes and red comlexion. He makes this declaration for purpose of obtaining the pension to which he may be entitled under the provisions of Sections 4736 to 4740 inclusive revised Statutes, and the Act of March 9, 1878, and hereby constitutes and appoints, with full powers of substitution and revocation, WILLIAM CONARD & CO. of Washington, D.C., his true and lawful attorneys, to prosecute his claim. He also declare that he has heretofore made an application for "Bounty land Warrant about the year 1858 but never received anything think perhaps the papers was never sent on" and that his residence is No._____,____street, city (or town) of Caverna county of Hart, State of Kentucky, and that his post-office address is Caverna, Hart County, Kentucky. Bryant A. (his mark X) Flanagan Attest: A. Miller (signature) R.W. Sublett (signature) Also personally appeared A. Miller, aged 34 years, resident, in Munfordville, Ky, and R. W. Sublett, aged 20 years, residing in Munfordville, Ky, persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who, being by me duly sworn, say that they have known the said Bryant A. Flanagan for 10 years and for 12 years, respectivelly; that they were present and saw him sign his name (or make his mark) to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with him, that he is the identical person he represents himself to be; and they further say that they are able to identify him as the identical person who rendered the service alleged in the above application (in the company of Captain____, in the regiment of _____ in the war of 1812) by the following-named facts and circumstances, viz: "from the statements of the applicant" and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. J. M. Brents, Clerk (sig) Hart County Court (This claim #31773 was rejected on Aug 12, 1878 stating that "there is no record evidence of the organization in which individual service is alleged".) A 2nd claim was filed on June 23, 1879 "appearing before me, B. Hughes, Police Judge", Bryant A. Flannigan at age 84. This claim stated that he was discharged in Chicago, Illinois during the winter of 1814. A physical description listed "5 feet 7 inches high, light complexion, auburn hair, blue eyes, and by occupation a farmer". His residence being near Caverna, county of Hart, State of Kentucky and his witnesses were Thos. H. Pemberton, aged 43/48 years, resident of Caverna, and Rufus Steffy, aged 73 years residing near Caverna, Hart Co., Ky., personally known to them for 35 years and 50 years, respectively. This was also rejected and a front sheet on the file states, "The name Bryant A. Flannigan does not appear on the records on the USA war of 1812 on file in this Office. The 17" US Infantry was raised in Ky. and was comd. by Col. John Miller. The records of this regt. are very incomplete." Signed by the Assistant Adjutant General S. ().
