POLLARD was born in Frederick County, Va., October 2, 1808, the third of eight children born to Elijah and Nancy (Ireland) Pollard. The father was a native of Virginia, but immigrated to Kentucky in 1809, settled in Jessamine County, where he remained five years, moving thence to Henry County, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits and stock raising. He was a carpenter by trade but did not follow it after coming to Kentucky. Mrs. Nancy Pollard was born in Virginia, a daughter of the distinguished Rev. James Ireland, who was born and educated in Edinburgh, Scotland; was one of the Baptist preachers persecuted in Virginia for preaching Baptist doctrine; was put in prison and dealt very unpleasantly with for some time. James I. Pollard was reared on a farm, and received a common school education. He has always been engaged in agricultural pursuits, and owns 150 acres of land near Eminence. He bought hogs for several different men for about twenty years, and has made a few shipments for himself of cattle and hogs to Louisville. He used to make a business of feeding cattle for the markets. He married, October 14, 1830, Eliza Smith, of Henry County, Ky., daughter of N. Smith of Virginia. Eleven children were born to this union, seven living: Kizzie I Guthrie, born August 20, 1831; Elijah B., born August 2, 1835; James W., born December 25, 1840; Martha A. Gray, born May 7, 1842; George T., born April 20, 1844; Mary L. Clifford, born September 16, 1848; and John F., born March 8, 1859. Mrs. Pollard died January 13, 1870, a member of the Baptist Church, of which Mr. Pollard is also a member. He has lived through an eventful period, and though advanced in years has a clear mind and is a very entertaining gentleman.
