Mattie's Scrapbook of Obituaries, page 7 Rev. W H Gammon A Highly Respected Minister of the Gospel Departed This Life At twenty minutes past two o'clock Thursday morning, Feb. 4, 1915, the spirit of Rev. W H Gammon departed from its earthly habitation, after he had been in ill health for several months of a complication of diseases. He was born in Kentucky Dec. 28, 1851, he was united in marriage to Mary G Sturgeon Jan. 16, 1879 and to this union was born two daughters, Mrs W J Wright, of Chrisney, Ind., and Mrs M R Brown, of Sebree, Ky. After completing his education, he taught school for several years, he also engaged in many public debates. He then united with the Primitive Baptist church at Big Creek, Cynthiana, Ind, and was baptized by Eld. Joel Hume. He was ordained a minister of the Gospel of the same faith and order in the year of 1880 at Cypress Church, Ky, and has been actively engaged in ministerial work during all those years. He has traveled in many different states proclaiming the unsearchable riches of Christ. He has served as Pastor from two to four churches yearly for the past thirty-five years and has been Pastor of his home church, at Friendship, near Chrisney, for the past twenty years where his membership was at death. He was among the best Baptist pulpit orators of Southern Ind. The funerals and weddings which he has officiated at are to numerous to mention. The funeral services were conducted at the M.E. church in Chrisney by Rev. J R Arnold, of Oakland City, assisted by Rev. J W Johnson, of Chrisney. The large crowd present showed the high esteem in which he was held. The pall-barers were Rev. J A Hile, Rev. J W Johnson, Dr. C S Baker, Dr. A M Bean, Robert Bolin and W W Barton. He was loved by all who knew him having a kind word for all. Rev. Gammon was a good christian man and has always tried to make the people of different churches and towns he visited as one big family in the great cause of a better and happier life here on earth and in the life hereafter. He will be greatly missed in Chrisney, his friendly smile and hand shake will never be forgotten. He was devoted to his family. He was a kind and loving husband and father. He leaves to mourn his departure a loving companion, two daughters, three grand-sons and a host of relatives and friends, but our loss is his eternal gain. The sympathy of the entire community was with the bereaved ones. The remains were laid to rest in the Oak Hill cemetery to await the resurection morn. Oh, how we miss our darling father, When we see his vacant chair; We miss him at the table, We miss him everywhere. We can't see why he had to go And leave us all behind. But we can only look to God To ease our troubled mind. Thou art gone, our precious husband and father, Never more we'll see thy face Till we meet thee o'er the river, In that happy dwelling place. Then we'll meet you precious father, There we'll clasp hands once more, When we meet to part, no, never, On that Happy Golden shore. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elder W H Gammon Was born in Kentucky, December 28, 1851, and departed this life February 4, 1915. Gammon has held many pastorates over southern Indiana, Kentuckey and Illinois. Elder William H Gammon Was born December 28, 1851 and died February 4, 1915, being sixty-three years, one month and six days old. He professed a hope in His Saviour in early age, and was soon after united with Big Creek Church of Primitive Baptists at Cynthiana, Indiana, being baptized into their fellowship by Elder Joel Humes. He was ordained to the full work of the gospel ministry by a presbytery called at Cypress Church, Ky July 8, 1880. The elders in this presbytery were John H Gammon and Joseph D jones, since which time he has been engaged in the pastoral care of from two to four churches, and traveling and preaching a great deal. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Sturgeon January 16, 1879, and to this union were born two daughters, Mrs M R Brown, of Sebree, Ky, and Mrs W J Wright, of Chrisney, Ind. He leaves to mourn his demise a loving, faithful, devoted wife, two daughters, two sisters and two brothers, besides other relatives and many friends. Elder Gammon realized the end was near, and a few weeks ago expressed a perfect willingness to go, saying he was ready, and only regretted to leave his wife and friends. He gave directions concerning his funeral, expressing a desire that the writer should preach his funeral, which I tried to do in the presence of a large sympathising crowd of people at Chrisney, Ind, February 6, 1915, using as a text Romans viii.11; after which the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Chrisney, Ind.
