Mattie's Scrapbook of Obituaries, page 8 FIRST DEATH FROM SMALLPOX IN COUNTY Jesse Harris Dies At Anton After Week's Illness -- 70 Cases In County Hopkins county has had its first death from smallpox during the present epidemic, Jesse Harris, aged 53, having died at Anton at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. He had been ill only a week and his death had been expected for several days. Mr Harris had the worst case in the county. All of the other cases are mild. He leaves a wife and five children. Jesse Harris, 1864-1918 Martha L "Sis", 1870-1920 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Death Claims A R O'Bannon At Earlington A R O'Bannon, 88, one of Earlington's oldest citizens and prominent in mining activities for fifty years, died in his home, 505 Westside avenue, at 11 am Thursday. Mr O'Bannon underwent a major operation last May 9 in Evansville and had suffered several heart attacks in the past week. Funeral services will be conducted in the home at 10 am Saturday, with Elder J D Shain of Madisonville officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews of Mr O'Bannon. Retired 18 Years Mr O'Bannon was born in Grayson county in 1862, the son of the late Mr and Mrs John R O'Bannon, and moved to Mortons Gap in 1886. For the past forty-eight years he had been a resident of Earlington. He was employed by the old St. Bernard Coal Company and by West Kentucky Coal Company in the capacity of mine foreman for fifty years in various mines. He retired some eighteen years ago while at Nisbet mine. Mr O'Bannon was married in 1887 to Martha McGregor, who died in 1938. Surviving are two children, Mrs Charles Trahern, Earlington, and Earl O'Bannon, Louisville; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs Brown had been a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for 65 years, for 42 years a member of the Madisonville church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs Rohrman, in Chicago, and Mrs Mayme Lampkin, Brandenburg, Ky; three sisters, Mrs Minnie Purdy and Mrs Bertha Purdy, both of Dawson Springs, and Mrs Lee David, Providence; three brothers, Charles Buntin, McLeod Lane; Billy Buntin, Island Ford Road; and Henry Buntin, Dawson Springs route 1; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The body was taken this afternoon from Harris Funeral Home to the family residence and will remain there until noon Saturday. Mrs Curneal was a member of a pioneer Hopkins county family and had been a member of the Madisonville Primitive Baptist church for many years. Her husband, Roland Curneal, died in 1925. Pallbearers were Otho Bowler, Marvin Bowles, Leslie Clayton, Forrest Clayton, Arden F Clayton, and the Rev. Arthur Tucker. Mr Clayton died Wednesday in Hopkins County Hospital after a three-week illness. Madisonville, Ky., Jan. 25. (AP)-- An explosion at the mine of the Flat Creek Coal company, seven miles east of here, killed four men today. The dead: Fred Monroe, Madisonville, mine superintendent, and stockholder, Chester Coffman, Karl Curry and Alonzo Utley, miners. The men were in a boat at the mouth of the mine which has been flooded by backwater. The powder magazine fell into the mine resulting in the explosion. The bodies of the men, who were thrown into the water, had not been recovered tonight. He was a native of Trigg County, Ky, and a brother-in-law of Russell and Eddie Beshear, Dawson Springs. Surviving are the widow, Mrs Ama Nell Miller; father, J H Miller, Paducah; brother, Lindsey Miller, Paducah, and sister, Miss Lorene Miller, also of Paducah. Mrs Hicks' death came after long illness. Mrs Hicks is survived by four daughters: Mrs Sisk; Mrs Noel McDowell, Providence; Mrs Geo. She was 73. Miss Monroe, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs W H Monroe, Providence, is survived by a brother, George D Monroe, Charleston, and a sister, Mrs R W Jennings, Eddyville. Another brother, Fred Monroe, was killed in a mining accident at Flat Creek mine, near here, in 1937. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm Friday at Providence Primitive Baptist church, of which Miss Monroe had been a member for many years. He had been ill for four years. The deceased had been a member of the Primitive Baptist church for forty years. Mr Veazey is survived by his widow and nine children.
