Mattie's Scrapbook of Obituaries, page 14 McKINSEY DEAD-- Funeral For Fire Chief Conducted Funeral services for Madisonville Fire Chief Benjamin Brank McKinsey, 127 North Harrig street, were conducted at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home at 2 o'clock this afternoon. The Rev. K A Loy, pastor of First Methodist Church, officiated and interment was in Odd Fellows cemetery. Active pallbearers were Homer _reston, Guy Devine, Howard Ren__o, Roy Cates, Calvin Walker and __ck Burden. Honorary pallbearers were Mayor David Parish, city officials and members of the fire department. McKinsey, 53, collapsed and died from a sudden hert attack while directing operations at a residential fire at 75 East Noel avenue shortly after noon on Saturday. The fire was only a minor blaze, and McKinsey several times had been in-and-out of the apartment being occupied by new tenants just moving in. With the blaze, caused by a floor furnace, under control by firemen, the fire chief turned away from the house, evidently to go to his fire car to return to the station, when he suddenly collapsed. Wouldn't Give Up The fire alarm at the station was answered at 12:15 pm and Chief McKinsey led the two trucks to the scene in his department car. He was stricken at approximately 12:35 pm. The department's emergency unit was called and McKinsey was taken to Hopkins County Hospital, being administered oxygen by fellow firemen enroute. Several doctors worked on the fire chief with all available equipment at the hospital for more than an hour to no avail. He was pronounced dead at 2 pm. Firemen said that McKinsey gave no indication that he wasn't feeling well. Member of his family also said that he hadn't complained about feeling ill that morning. McKinsey had had a heart condition for a number of years, having suffered several attacks pre-___. However, the likeable and always accommodating chief would not give up and continued in his capacity as "a working chief". He was the type of leader that never asked his men to do something that he wouldn't do himself. Several of his friends had predicted for years that he would die while fighting a fire. McKinsey had been associated with the Madisonville fire department for almost 37 years in various capacities. He started with the then volunteer department as a "sleeper" in 1926. When the department became a paid department in September of 1936, McKinsey was named assistant chief, a post he held for 20 years. When Basil K Toombs retired as chief of the department June 30, 1956, the Madisonville city council one month later named McKinsey as head of the department. Born Here in 1909 McKinsey was born in Madisonville on February 28, 1909, the son of the late Benjamin Browder McKinsey and Mary Ada Jagoe McKinsey. He was a member of Madisonville First Methodist Church; of Eureka Camp No. 25, Woodmen of the World; and of the Lions (Please Turn To Page Eight) Rites For Fire Chief Conducted (Continued From Page One Club, of which he was a director.
