Mattie's Scrapbook of Obituaries, page 15 Inquest In Siria Death On Tuesday H Bertram Siria, 45, assistant foreman of Coiltown Mining Company, died in Hopkins County Hospital here at 7:47 am today from a self- inflicted bullet wound, the suicide attempt having been made in the Siria home around 11:15 last night. Siria, a member of a prominent Hopkins county family, worked the night shift at Coiltown, but the mine's employees are on a long holiday weekend. Coroner Hubert Reid, Earlington, said this morning that an inquest into the death has been set for 10 am next Tuesday, July 9, at the court house in Madisonville. No Motive Established Reid said that Siria's wound was inflicted with a ..2 caliber pistol, the bullet entering the left temple and ranging upward before lodging. No motive was established this morning for the suicide, although it was known that Siria was not in good health and there had been strained relations between Siria and his wife for sometime, Mrs Siria having filed a divorce complaint against her husband in the spring. City police reported that they received a call from Yellow Cab at 11:20 pm Friday night to send the emergency unit to the Siria home on Laffoon Trail. Patrolmen Kenneth Day, Larry Beck and Tom Browder called the emergency unit and followed it to the Siria home, where Siria was found with a bullet wound in his head. Records in the emergency room at the hospital show that he was admitted to the hospital at 11:30 last night. The Madisonville police department reported that Mrs Siria had gone in a cab to get medicine for her husband, who had reportedly suffered a seizure earlier in the evening as they were dining together at a Madisonville restaurant. Siria had a history of heart trouble and Mrs Siria called a cab (she doesn't drive) when she discovered that he had none of his medicine at home. It was when she returned from getting the medicine that she discovered her husban's body. Mrs Siria caught the cab driver as he was turning around in the drive, and he radioed the office and the call was relayed to the police, it was said. Mr and Mrs Siria were having dinner together last night, it was reported, in an effort to affect a reconciliation. Arrangements Incomplete Siria is a native Hopkins countian, the son of Mr and Mrs George Siria, 835 Hanson street. Surviving are the wife, Mrs Marjorie Siria; the parents; a son, H Bertram Siria Jr., at home, and a daughter, Mrs Mark E Eastin III, Panama City, Fla.; a sister, Mrs Nadine Taylor, Nebo; and a brother, George W Siria, Uniontown, Ky. The body is at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending the arrival of Mrs Eastin,w ho is enroute home from Florida with her husband and Bert Jr., who was visiting them. Siria Funeral Rites Conducted Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 this afternoon in Salem Primitive Baptist Church on Laffoon Trail for H Bertram Siria, 45, Madisonville, an assistant foreman for Coiltown Mining Company. Elder J D Shain, church pastor, officiated, assisted by the Rev. H A Pullen Jr., pastor of First Methodist Church. Interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Pallbearers were John Q Adams Jr., Hopkinsville, and John T Johnson, Ronald Strader, Wiley Moore, Oscar Winders and Jim Nance, all of Madisonville. He was a member of First Methodist Church and a veteran of World War II. Cab Driver Gets Help She managed to stop the cab driver before he pulled away and the driver radioed to the cab office to notify police and the fire department's emergency unit. He was a member of the Nortonville Holiness Church. Surviving are the wife, Mrs Gertha Powell; two sons, James Powell, St Charles, and Paul Ray Powell, Pensacola, Fla.; a brother, Willie Powell, Lakewood, Fla.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held today at 2:30 pm at the Nortonville Holiness Church with the Rev. Amos R Jackson officiating. Burial was in New Salem Cemetery. Bandy Funeral Home was in charge.
