Surviving are the husband, Y I Gibson, two sisters, Mrs Rebecca Fugate, Dallas, Texas, and Mrs Bertha Winstead, Nebo and one brother, William Springfield, Warren, Arizona. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 pm Sunday in Slaughters Baptist Church. The Rev. J W Robison will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Millard Skinner Jr. Burial will be in Shady Grove cemetery. The body is at Harris Funeral Home here. ------------- Pete Gibson, 71, Slaughters, Dies Y M "Pete" Gibson, 71, died at 10 am. Monday in his home on Slaughters route 1. Surviving is a brother, C M Gibson, of Dixon. Funeral services will be held at 1 pm. Wednesday at Slaughters Baptist Church with the Rev. J W Robison officiating. Shady Grove Cemetery, Poole, Webster Co, Ky Lillian Gibson, 1900-1961 Lora E Gibson, 1897-1919 Y M Gibson, 1891-1962 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- E W Dozier, Veteran Realtor, Dies At Age 74 Elza Winfield Dozier, 74, a founder of Hopkins County's oldest real estate firm, died at 9 am. today in Hopkins County Hospital following a heart attack suffered in his home, 67 East Broadway, at 10 pm. Monday. Funeral services for Mr Dozier are scheduled for 3:30 pm. Wednesday in Barnett-Strother Funeral Home, South Main, with the Rev. Harry A Pullen Jr., pastor of First Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery. E W Dozier was born in Yellville, Arkansas, on October 20, 1888, the son of the late Robert G and Martha Simms Dozier. They later moved to Texas and it was from Greenville, Tex., that E W Dozier came to Madisonville in 1916 to manage the old Garrick Theater- on the site of the present Capitol Theater in Union street- for his father-in-law, Rush C Watkins. Owned Several Theaters In 1919 he and his brother W B Dozier, Madisonville, founded the real estate firm which continues in Union street today, with sons Rush and Bill Dozier associated. Over the years, Mr Dozier was owner of other movie theaters, including the old Roxy Theater at Earlington and theaters in Providence and Morganfield. He was always active in real estate developements and was a leader in the orderly development of some of Madisonville's subdivisions. E W Dozier was long active in Boy Scout activities in this area and some 15 years ago was honored with the Silver Beaver award. He was a founder of Scout Troop 1 at First Christian Church, the first Scout troop in an area of several counties, some 33 years ago. He was a charter member of Madisonville Kiwanis Club and Madisonville Country Club and a long time Elk and Shriner. He was a member of First Methodist Church. Worked Monday He served three terms as Madisonville city councilman, from 1934 through 1937 and from 1939 thru 1941, representing the town's 5th Ward. He was long active in Democratic politics in this area. Taken to the hospital, he was conscious right up to the end, rallying for a while early this morning. Mr Dozier was preceded in death by his wife, Cornelia Watkins Dozier, on March 2, 1957. Matties Note: died Aug 27, 1963 Oddfellows Cemetery, Madisonville, Ky Cornelia W Dozier, July 25, 1895-March 2, 1958 Eliza W Dozier, October 20, 1888-Aug 27, 1960 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mrs Will Cardwell Dies, Bethlehem Funeral Tuesday Mrs Bessie Ray Cardwell, 75, wife of Will Cardwell, 131 Cardwell avenue, Madisonville, died at 4:30 pm Sunday in St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, from complications following a gall-bladder operation. She had been a patient in the Nashville hospital for two weeks after spending one week in Hopkins County Hospital. Mrs Cardwell was born March 22, 1887, in Hanson, the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Jefferson Stodghill, and had spent her entire life in Hopkins County. She was educated in the Madisonville city schools. Mrs Cardwell was married to William Everett Cardwell on October 10, 1906, in Springfield, Tenn. They lived at the Cardwell home Lonesome Pine, in Anton, until 17 years ago when they moved to the Cardwell avenue address. Lonesome Pine was a center of hospitality for the entire time that the Cardwells resided there, with guests in the house most of the time. Mrs Cardwell was a wonderful southern cook, renowned far and wide for her hickory nut cake and chocolate fudge. In addition to rearing their own two daughters and one sone, the Cardwells helped in the rearing of several other children and kept Mrs Frances Frederick Hoffman from the time she was a youngster until she was married. Mrs Hoffman, who now lives in Detroit, is coming to Madisonville for the final rites. Mrs Cardwell was famous for her needlework and was a regular prize winner in this department at the Hopkins County Fair. She was especially well known for her fancy quilts and braided and hooked rugs. She had started a quilt and had a portion of it quilted at the time she became ill. Active In Church Work She was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church and was very active in it's Ladies Aid Society. She was also a member of the Anton Homemakers Club and of Clarr 14 of Madisonville First Christian Church. Mrs Cardwell was a collector of antiques and her home is a showplace for these. She enjoyed nothing better than attending an auction where antiques were to be sold. She was vitally interested in 4-H club work in the county and she and Mr Cardwell contributed to this work in many ways. She was a charitable person, giving to many causes without publicity or fanfare. She always helped those less fortunate. Mrs Cardwell was an indefatigable gardener. She could "grow anything" and her rose garden was her pride and joy. Funeral 2:30 Tuesday The body was taken from Barnett-Strother Funeral Home to the Cardwell avenue home today to await final rites, which will be held at 2:30 Tuesday in Bethlehem Christian Church. The Rev. Don Baker, pastor of the church, will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Dr. H W Brown, Dobbs Ferry, and Davis H Brown, Cambridge, Mass., are flying home for the funeral. Big Crowd At Cardwell Rites Today Funeral services for Mrs Bessie Ray Cardwell, 131 Cardwell avenue, Madisonville, were held this afternoon at 2:30 in Bethlehem Christian Church, east of Madisonville. The Rev. Don Baker, church pastor, officiated and interment followed in the church cemetery. An overflow crowd attended the final rites. Mrs Cardwell, who was 75, was well knkown all over the county for her interest in young people and her church and charity work. Pallbearers, all grandsons except one, who is a grandson-in-law, were William Ray Cardwell Jr., William Cardwell Brown, David H Brown, Coleman Cardwell, Holeman Cardwell and Welby Sellers. Serving as honorary pallbearers were John Gray, Edgar Arnold Sr., Clarence Maloney, J E Nall, Ardell Holmes, F W Fridy, J R Breedlove, W R Perry, Everett Tucker, who is a nephew and Guy Staton. Mrs Cardwell died Sunday afternoon in St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville from complications which followed gall-bladder surgery. She had been in the Nashville hospital for two weeks and was a patient in Hopkins County Hospital for a week prior to being admitted to St. Thomas Hospital.
