Matties Scrapbook of Obituaries, page 30 DR J S WALLER DIES AT HANSON Prominent Physician Passes Away Last Friday After Lingering Illness. FUNERAL HELD SUNDAY Had Practiced His Profession at The Place for the Past Forty Years and Was Popular Man. Following an illness of several months, Dr J S Waller, one of the pioneer citizens of Hanson, died at his home in that city last Friday afternoon at 12:15. Dr Waller had been in bad health for some time and for the past ten days his condition had grown worse and death had been expected. Last winter Dr Waller was taken to Florida in hopes that the climate there would benefit him, but he became worse and it was necessary to bring him back home. Dr Waller located in Hanson in March 1872, and has since lived in that little city, beginning the practice of medicine in 1874. He was one of the old landmarks of the town, his death being the removal of the second in the past few months, the other being W H Weir, who came to Hanson in January, 1872, and who died last November. Dr Waller was 68 years of age. He was a director in the People's Bank of Hanson and was interested in other enterprises in that little city. Besides his wife, the deceased is survived by four children, Mrs R H Pritchett, Mrs O C Bailey and Ashby Waller, all of Hanson, and Mrs S D Byrnes, of East St Louis, Ill, all of whom were at the bedside when the end came. Funeral services were conducted at the family residence Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and the popularity of the deceased was attested by the vast throng that was present being the largest crowd ever to attend a funeral at that place. The services were conducted by Rev. S T Smith, of Pittsburg, Kan., assisted by Rev. Swann, of Sebree. Interment followed at East Lawn cemetery. Quite a number of Madisonville people attended the funeral. [Need burial information] --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Funeral Rites For Dr. Finley Conducted Here Funeral services were conducted in First Christian Church here at 10:30 am today for Dr A F Finley, 254 South Franklin street, prominent Madisonville physician who died from a sudden heart attack in his home Saturday afternoon while watching television. He was 80 years old. At the time of his death, Dr Finley was medical director of Hopkins County Health Department, having taken that post in 1960 when he retired from private practice after ministering to the sick of Hopkins county for fifty six years. The Rev. Charles Blakemore, pastor of First Christian Church, officiated at the service today, being assisted by Dr G W Hummel, minister emeritus of First Methodist Church. Interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Follower of Sports Active pallbearers were J A Miner, Stanley T Stokes, R S Wilson, B D Rodgers, F M Holeman, John Casner, Fred Nichols and Ben Ashmore. Members of the Hopkins County Medical Society were honorary pallbearers, as well as Dr L G Ray, Don Peeler, Clyde Ruby and J B Moore. All offices in Hopkins County Courthouse and all Madisonville drug stores were closed for an hour this morning during the funeral. The health department offices are located in the basement of the courthouse. Although Dr Finley had not been well in recent months, he had continued at work at the health department and had worked all last week, with Friday being a particularly hard day. The department is closed on Saturdays. An avid sports enthusiast, with baseball being his No. 1 following. Dr Finley had listened by radio Saturday afternoon to the Chicago- Detroit game, then switched to television baseball when the Chicago game was concluded. He died sitting in his chair, "just went to sleep" while members of his family sat on the front porch. Death came at 4:05 pm. Born At St. Charles Austin Flint Finley was born October 24, 1881, at St. Charles in Hopkins county, the son of the late Dr. Thomas Randolph Finley and Mariah Hart Finley. He attended Male High School in Louisville and South Kentucky College in Hopkinsville, and graduated in 1904 from Kentucky University in Louisville. He began practicing his profession at Ilsley soon after his graduation from KU. Dr. Finley was married to Mary Agnes Salmon at Ilsley in 1912 and they moved to Madisonville in 1920. Dr. Frederick A Scott was also associated here with Dr. Finley in the practice of medicine for several years. It was in the summer of 1965 that Dr. Finley retired from private practice after fifty-six years and soon afterward accepted the post of medical director of the county's health department--a position he held at the time of his death Saturday afternoon. Post-Graduate Work Dr. Finley was a member of First Christian Church. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Kentucky Medical Association and the Hopkins County Medical Society, being a past president of the county organization. He did post-graduate work at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC , at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md., and at Tulane University in New Orleans, La. He was a member of Phi Chi fraternity at Kentucky University. Surviving are the wife; three daughters, Mrs James G Bone, 121 East Broadway, and Misses Mary Hart Finley and Agnes Finley, both of 254 South Franklin; two grandchildren, Flint Finley Bone and James Rash Bone, 121 East Broadway; and a brother, Kimmel Hart Finley, of Bandana, Ky. The body was brought to the home of his son, R H Whitson, here today, and funeral services will be conducted from the Baptist church here Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock with interment in the Slaughters cemetary. During his illness Dr. Morton had been a patient at the Hopkins County Hospital and the Veterans Hospital in Louisville. Widely known in medical circles in western Kentucky and elsewhere in Kentucky, Dr. Morton had been seriously ill at his home for several weeks. He was a deacon of the Madisonville First Baptist church and church clerk and had been a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows since early manhood. He was also a member of Olive Leaf Lodge No. 55, Order of Rebekahs, in Madisonville. Dr. Morton was born in the Moss Hill section of Hopkins county and was the son of the late Adolph and Sallie Littlepage Morton. He was a graduate of the Louisville College of Medicine. He married Miss Mabel Tudor in 1910, who survives. No children were born of this union. Rites 2 P.M. Tuesday Other survivors are two sisters, Mrs Lois Morton Lovan, Grapevine road, and Mrs Bertha Turley, Mortons Gap, and two brothers, Willie Morton and Walter Morton, both of Mortons Gap. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm Tuesday at Madisonville First Baptist church. The Rev. Harold D Tallant, pastor of the First Baptist church, will be in charge of services. He will be assisted by the Revs. C D Cole, Mortons Gap, L M Winstead, Owensboro, and C B Curtis, Madisonville. Burial will be in Odd Fellows cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Everett Turley, Evansville; Wesley Morton, Henderson; Claud Morton, Mortons Gap; Will D Stokes and Billy Bowers, Greenville, and Bobby Bowers, Louisville. The honorary pallbearers will be deacons of the Madisonville First Baptist church and members of the Hopkins County Medical Society, of which Dr. Morton was a member. WWI Nov 26, 1877-March 22, 1953 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. David Salmon Dies In Florida Dr. David L Salmon, 55, who for twenty years practiced as an eye, ear and nose specialist in Madisonville, died at 11 o'clock last night in Bay Pines Hospital, St. Petersburg, Florida, relatives here were notified last night. Dr. Salmon was chief eye, ear and nose specialist at the Bay Pines hospital until 1949, when he was stricken with a coronary disease from which he never fully recovered. Dr. Salmon was a member of the Presbyterian church, in St. Petersburg, and funeral services will be held Friday, with burial in Bay Pines veterans cemetery, it was learned today. Dr. Salmon is survived by his wife, Ann Bell Almon, a son David, serving in the Air Force in Bermuda, but who was home on annual furlough at the time of his father's death; a daughter, Betsy Anne Salmon; mother, Mrs John G Salmon Sr., East Center street, Madisonville; a brother, John G Salmon Jr., East Center street, Madisonville; and a sister, Mrs Henry Thorring, Hudson, Mass.
