Allen One of State's leading road contractors dies here following short illness. Funeral services were held here Wednesday afternoon for Elbert M Allen, Sr., who died at St. Joseph's infirmary Monday evening at 7:45. Mr. Allen, who was in his sixty-fifty year, had been ill just a few days although at times he had suffered upsurges of blood pressure. Althought a native of Muhlenberg County, Mr. Allen had been a resident of Jeffersontown for many years. As head of the Allen-Codell Company, Inc., with offices at Winchester, he was known throughout the state as one of Kentucky's largest road contractors. The company has constructed some of the state's main highways and has handled extensive construction projects in other states. For thirty years or more Mr. Allen had been active in building good roads and had seen Kentucky's public road system develop into its present network of paved highways. Possessing a friendly, amicable disposition, Mr. Allen acquired friends wherever he went, and to all who knew him he was ever the same cheerful, trustful, "E.M. Allen." He was civic minded and always ready and willing to make a liberal contriburion to worthwhile community projects. He held membership with the Jeffersontown Masonic Lodge and was a veteran of the Spanish-American war. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Myrtle Allen Bradley; two sons, James B. Allen and Capt. E.M. Allen, Jr., with the U.S. Air Corps in England; two daughters, Mrs. Caroline Thomas and Miss Ella Louise Allen. His mother, Mrs. Nancy Allen, and two grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.F. Huddleston, pastor of the Jeffersontown Methodist Church, and Rev. W.E. Lawrenson, pastor of Beargrass Christian Church. Interment was in Resthaven ... .
