Ex-Pastor of Jeffersontown Church, The Rev. R.E. Connell Dies at 48. He was living in North Carolina. The Rev. Raymond E. Connell, former pastor of Jeffersontown Baptist Church, died at 5 a.m., yesterday in a Waynesville, N.C. hospital. He was 48. Mr. Connell suffered a heart attach while on a hunting trip near Waynesville during the Thanksgiving weekend. He was pastor of the Jeffersontown church from 1948 until early 1951. He had been pastor of a church in Courtney, N.C., the past two years. While at Jefferstown, Mr. Connell and members of his congregation built a new church, acting as their own contractors and purchasing agents and doing much of the work themselves. The old Jefferstontown Baptist Church had been destroyed by fire in 1937, and the congregation had been holding services in a basement auditorium. The new church was built over the basement. Mr. Connell received his doctor's degree in theology from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1951. He also studied at Wingate N.C., Junior College and Catawba College, Salisbury, N.C. A native of Rowan County, North Carolina, he began preaching when he was 14. He and his wife...married when he was a junior in highschool and she was in the eighth grade. Mr. Connell worked as a barber to help pay his way through college and the seminary here. Besides his wife, survivors include a sister, Mra. Millard Cheek, Kannapolis, N.C., and three brothers. ...Peter J., Robert E., Richard , and Thomas J. Casey, Jr.; two sisters Misses Jennie and Louise Murphy; and seven grandchildren. The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at Dougherty & Son Funeral Home, 3237 West Broadway, and at 10 a.m. in Holy cross Church. Connell, 48, pastor for the last two years of the Baptist Church at Courtney, N.C., died December 5 at a hospital in Waynesville, N.C., following a heart attack he had while hunting during the Thanksgiving season. He was pastor of the Jeffersontown Baptist church, near Louisville, Ky., during 1948-51, at which time the present meeting house was erected on the old foundation, left from a fire some years before in 1937. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Beulah Connell, one sister and three brothers.
