"LOUISVILLE'S FIRST BRICKMAKER DEAD," Hamilton T. Figg succumbs at age of Ninety-six.  
Former Wealthy Man Later Loses Much Property.  Survived by five children. 
Hamilton Taylor Figg one of the first brickmakers of this city, died in his 96th year at his 
residence, 1001 East Jeffersn St., at 5:30 yesterday morning.  His death was due to the 
infirmaties of old age & came after an illness of only 10 days.  Mr. Figg carried his age 
splendidly & showed no indication of serious illness until 10 days ago when he became 
bedridden.

Mr. Figg was born in Shelby County, but removed to Louisville early in life & starting from 
the bottom of the ladder rose rapidly & soon was one of the best known residence of this 
city.  He started in life  by earning a livihood by breaking rock & driving a wagon.  Later 
he became foreman in a Louisville packing house & soon earned enough to permit him to engage 
in business.

55 years ago he started a brickyard at Jackson & Caldwell streets which was one of the first 
brickyards of this city.  He conducted this yard for 35 years, during which time he 
accumulated a large fortune.  Twenty years ago he retired from business & meeting with 
reverses, lost a large part of his wealth.  Mr. Figg was of a charitable disposition & was 
well beloved.

Mr. Figg is survivied by his wife, Mrs. N. A. Figg & 5 children.  They are Mrs. John T. 
Spangler, of St. Louis, Mrs. Edward Smith & Miss Anna Figg of this city, & Henry H. Figg & 
Hamilton A. Figg, of Louisville.  The funeral services will be held at the residence at 10 
a.m. tomorrow morning.  Burial will be in Eastern Cemetery.
