L. McQU(can't read) Jeffersontown, was fatally shot at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon while visiting the home of Mr. And Mrs. Edgar FRANCIS, on Old Heady Road near Hopewell Road. This is about 4 miles southeast of Jeffersontown. County Detective Eugene SCANNELL said McQUEESE was shot by Leslie BRUMLEY, 50, a boarder at the FRANCIS home. BRUMLEY was charged with murder. MCQUEESE had just taken Mrs. Mary JONES, Jeffersontown to visit the FRANCISES when the shooting occurred. Mrs. JONES is a long standing friend of the FRANCISES. McQUEESE boarded at Mrs. JONES' home. BRUMLEY said a quarrel developed in which McQUEESE ands Mrs. JONES cursed him and tried to get Mr. and Mrs. FRANCIS to make him leave their home. SCANNELL quoted BRUMLEY as saying he got a shotgun from his bedroom, pointed it at MCQUEESE and pulled the trigger after MCQUEESE opened the screen door and threatened to hit him. He said he did not believe the gun was loaded and had only intended to scare McQUEESE. Deputy Coroner Harry ELSTONE said the blast struck McQUEESE in the chest from a distance of about four feet, killing him outright. BRUMLEY later told SCANNELL he had been a patient at Central State Hospital for 3 years before 1939. McQUEESE was an employee of the Mengel company He survived by a son Ben L. McQUEESE, Jr.
