Mrs. Mary Wood Newkirk, a venerable and well-known lady, died February 4, 1884, at her late residence near Middletown, Jefferson county. She was one of the pioneers of this State. Her husband, the late Gen. Jacob Newkirk, who died in February, 1878, was among the first settlers of Jefferson county. He located near Middletown, which was at that time a prosperous town, and far more pretentious than Louisville, the latter place being nothing more than a few straggling huts, that gave no promise of ever being the metropolis of 150,000 inhabitants that it is today. Gen. Newkirk served with distinction through the war of 1812, and at the close returned to the more peaceful pursuits of life. He was for a long time proprietor of the then well-known hotel at Shelbyville, Ky., known as Washington Hall. It was here that Gen. Lafayette was entertained by Gen. and Mrs. Newkirk, when he made his tour through the United States. Gen. Jackson was also a guest, on his tour through the State. The subject of this sketch was born at Winchester, Va., August 10, 1801. She was educated at Walnut Hill Academy, same place. Her father, Capt. Frank Young, commanded the United States forces at Harper's Ferry is 1812, when the British destroyed Washington. She became the wife of Gen. Newkirk, February 28, 1820. She lived to see her children established in business. They surrounded her bedside and made her departure from earth as peaceful as possible. Her life was one of activity and usefulness. Since the death of her husband she had been drawing a pension, as he was a gallant soldier of 1812. She was the mother of Mr. Wm. H. Newkirk, of the Internal Revenue service. Her remains will be interred at Middletown today. The old landmarks are passing away. Soon a new generation will take their place.
