Funeral services were held sunday afternoon in the First Baptist Church, Jeffersontown, for the Rev. Watson Russell Slade, 39, its pastor, who died at noon last Friday, four hours after suffering a heart attack in the parsonage next door to the church on Taylorsville Road. Officiating at the services were the Rev. Dale Moody, of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, the Rev. J.K. Allaby and the Rev. H.C. Zicafoose. The body was taken to his native Canada for interment. Dynamic, sociable and an elequent speaker, the Rev. Mr. Slade had taken an active interest in all persons and civic affairs of the Jeffersontown community since coming here more than two years ago. His principal mission in life was serving as spiritual leader to those with whom he came in contact. He came here from Marion County, Kentucky, where he was a pastor of Stewart's Creek Church several years. His annual Vacation Bible School which he personlly conducted, had reached a capacity attendance earlier in the week and prospective students had to be turned away. He was preparing for the Friday session when the heart attack came. During his leadership at the church, membership showed a steady increase. He recently was elected president of the Jeffersontown Ministerial Association. A native of Oxford, Nova Scotia, the Rev. Mr. Slade was a veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force and had been a Canadian highschool principal and a pioneer minister in Northern Ontario before coming to Kentucky in 1947. He was a graduate of the Toronto Baptist Seminary, the University of Toronto and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville. His wife, Mrs. Charlotte Blair Slade, and their two children, Blair and Patricia Ann, flew to Toronto after the Jeffersontown rites to meet the body when it arrived by train Monday. Among the persons who paid their last respects to the Rev. Mr. Slade was the congregation of the First Negro Baptist Church, Jeffersontown, which marched to the parsonage in a body following conclusion of its own services Sunday. Other services were held Tuesday in Toronto.
